I was already fairly familiar with the ISSS for my grade level/content area and have been implementing the majority of them in my classroom through direct instruction. With my 7th graders, I teach U.S. History from Settlement to right before the Civil War, so these standards fit in easily with my content. We cover the Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and government beginnings & issues in our new nation.
However, there are 2 civic standards that I am unsure how to implement in my classroom: SS.CV.4.6-8.LC "Explain the connection between interests and perspectives, civic virtues, and democratic principles when addressing issues in government and society." And also the MC extension of that standard, "Critique deliberative processes used by a wide variety of groups in various settings."

I am already covering many of the new social science standards in my classroom, even though my district is not officially implementing them until this upcoming school year. The civics standards, though, are not being addressed in the manner in which they should be. We have always discussed the branches of government and that there are different levels of government, but our new standards go much further into the roles and responsibilities of each level of government. The only question/concern that I have at this point is the civic standard that asks students to identify civic values and democratic principles such as liberty, mutual respect,

My biggest question with the standards is how to include the financial literacy standards. I am responsible for teaching from the colonies to Reconstruction and both the federal and Illinois Constitutions. Luckily because I teach both Constitutions I am already getting into the Civics standards, but I would like it to be more meaningful. Because I teach middle school, we have to spend a lot of time on the basic structure of the government because this is really the first exposure the kids have.

The question for me is what standards to use? I realize many of the new standards encompass the same ideas, but it gets exhausting to learn and incorporate new standards on a regular basis. We have the new illinois standards, the C3 Framework and the Common Core. Like I said, I realize they are similar, but to students need to understand the standards. This means they need to be discussed in class as what the standard is trying to accomplish. When standards are coming from different places it becomes murky for students as what they are.

My first thought is, "How do we incorporate Civics into our curriculum that is already set, when we barely have enough time to complete the curriculum now at the elementary level?" We do work with Scholastic News and that gives us an opportunity to focus on current events. I could see how I would incorporate some of the civics standards within those lessons, but that is once a week, if I'm lucky enough to find the time for the Scholastic News. I'm looking forward to reading other elementary teacher's ideas about including more standards into an already packed school day. However, as I sit and contemplate this questions of incorporating civics, I am excited about including debates and group learning when we do have the opportunity to research, discuss, and learn about events in history as well as current events. My goal is to incorporate more problem based learning.
Andrea

My question is how do I incorporate the Civic Standards into my ELA and Writing blocks so I feel like I have sufficient time to teach multiple standards at the same time? Also, where do I find effective resources that I can use throughout the school year? Luckily a lot of our third grade Social Studies curriculum focuses on Community and the new Social Science standards for third grade are "Communities Near and Far" so I feel like we can take what we've been using and enhance it to meet the new standards. I would also like to teach using more primary sources and inquiry based learning opportunities.

We teach Government (eventually Civics) senior year so we have until the 19-20 school year to implement everything. Anyway I do not see the time. The sample lesson plan of 1-2 days is insane. Even with my best seniors, it would take at least 4-5 days to do. Our school district HIGHLY DISCOURAGES homework and the vast majority work jobs so I do not know how to incorporate everything into the semester and still do US and IL Constitution Tests. Also, this is not going to impact drop outs in our building since 99% of them happen before they get to me. This is Jeremy Gibson in the Civics Workshop as I couldn’t find a way to type in password.

One question we have been grappling with about the new standards is what is considered implementation. If we do one activity/lesson is that enough? Or does that standard need to be thought about multiple times? The Civics standards are something I personally struggle with implementing in my class - but as a Social Studies department we are looking for opportunities as a school to get students involved with the community. Overall, we felt the standards fit in well with our curriculum and highlighted areas for us that we need to focus on more.
Erica Pilon

One of the biggest questions I have discussed with others is, "What does assessment look like- especially for the skill based standards?" Many schools are transitioning to standards based grading, so objective assessment of skills and dispositions is challenging.
