  • 1857 Dred Scott, Plaintiff in Error v. John F. A. Sanford:
    • The Supreme Court denied citizenship to Black people, setting the stage for their treatment as second class citizens.
    • 1865 Bureau of Refugees and Freedmen / Black Codes:
    The first Black school were set up under the Freedmen's Bureau. Public schools were segregated.
    • 1866 Civil Rights Act:
    The intention of this law was to protect all people of their civil rights no matter what the race.
    • 1875 Civil Rights Act:
    Prohibited segregation in public places.
    • 1887 Jim Crow Laws:
    Blacks largely disappeared for juries in the South

    Court argued that there was no evidence that the decision was based of racial discrimination

    On February 28, Brown v Board of Education was filed in Federal district court in Kansas.
    • 1951 June:
    Brown v Board of Education went to court, the U.S. District Court said that "no willful, or substantial discrimination".
    • 1953 June:
    The Supreme Court ordered that a second round would be heard in October.
    • 1953 September:
    Justice Earl Warren would go on to deliver the unanimous ruling in the Brown v Board of Education case.
    • 1953 May 17:
    The Court overturned Plessy v Ferguson and declared that racial segregation in public school violate the Equal Protection of the 14th Amendment.
