The muscular system provides movement both voluntary and involuntary. This system operates using 3 different kinds of muscles, skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle. Together these muscles make the muscular system able to function properly and work with other systems to maintain a healthy body.

To become a physical therapist you have to go to undergraduate school and then partake in 3 years of a DPT program. They can then decide to to an internship of a fellowship based on specifically what they want to do. The average salary for a physical therapist is $98,000. Physical therapists work in a wide range of places such as hospitals, outpatient care centers, nursing homes, schools, and sports facilities. This profession relates to the muscular system because it helps people recover from injuries or learn how to live more comfortably with diseases that affect their muscular system.

A specific condition I want to focus on is joint hypermobility which I struggle with. Joint hypermobility is also known as hyperextension or being double-jointed which is not entirely correct. You physically can not have a double joint, people just describe it as this because the joint can come out very easily. Although some would describe it as a fun party trick or just being flexible, I have struggled with this most of my life and have had a few experiences where I got injured because of hypermobility. For example, in my freshman year, I participated in softball and was in the weight room one morning doing a workout with the bar using one arm and thrusting it above my head. Once my shoulder was extended fully above my head it came out of the socket, locked, and the weight of the bar tried to take my arm back down but it was stuck. Thankfully I was able to drop the bar before it further damaged my arm, but I decided after that and other injuries I faced from softball to quit. It is frustrating and uncomfortable because I can not do things to the fullest extent that I want to without injuring myself. I work to try and strengthen the joints that are weaker and build up more muscle around them, but I will always face this issue.
