"Should I confide in Joana? Maybe she could help me. But I knew what would happen. She would be disgusted." p. 36
Emilia is asking herself is she can trust Joana, but she is certain that Joana would not react well to what she has been through. This question makes me wonder how no one is able to trust anyone during the war. It also make me wonder about victims of violence, and why they feel ashamed when they did not cause the violence.

Poorly made shoes will torture your feet, inhibit your progress. then you will stop." He squeezed my arm. His soft red face peered out from beneath his hat. "And then you will die." He whispered" pg.13

"The shoes always tell the story," Said the shoe poet.
"Not always," I countered.
"Yes always. Your boots, they are expensive, well made.
