Not all students with disabilities are the same. Like any other person or student, people with disabilities have strengths and needs. Not one person is the same and it is important to remember not to make assumptions about someone's disability. What we know about one person with a disability may not be the same for another. "People with disabilities have Individualized needs. Each student’s needs are unique. Blanket approaches to accommodation that rely on labels and generalizations are not acceptable." - Ontario Human Rights Commission

Many people with disabilities are independant and capable. It is important to acknowledge that people with disabilities may not struggle. Identifying strengths and playing to those strengths will allow growth. It is also important not to ignore the needs of a person with a disability but rather embrace them and ensure various measures are put in place to support. If you would like to help someone with a disability, ask if he or she needs it before you act, and never make assumptions of that you think they can and can't do. Treating everyone with Respect for Dignity because all people and students with disabilities have the right to receive educational services in a manner that respects their dignity.
