Question 2: Self-Motivation Quiz

I scored a 39 on the “Self-Motivation Quiz”. The response I had gotten informed me that just because I'm not failing doesn't mean I can't achieve more. It also states that I need to increase the motivation factors in my life. I agree with this. After all, I only find the need to complete assignments when I know it has a benefit to me such as a higher grade or giving me extra credit which isn't good because I should do my work for the cause of educating myself and learning not just for helping my grade. As said on page 357 of psychological theories of the textbook “Expectancies, or what we believe or assume will happen, are also important to motivation.” I believe this relates to my way of thinking. I do these assignments because I know it will help me with the end goal of getting a good grade by the end of the semester. I will complete an assignment if it's summative or will bring my grade up. Which isn't good because again I need to complete these assignments to gain the knowledge they will give me. I will usually wait til the last minute which then causes me to stress but lately, I have started to realize it's better to get ahead and finish it where I have the time to still ask for help and guidance.

Question 3: Self-Confidence Quiz

On the “Self-Confidence Quiz,” I scored 43 out of 51 and I am doing an ok job of recognizing my skills and believing in my abilities. It also says that I am too hard on myself which can affect the benefit of your mastery experiences. I agree with that as I am very hard on myself when I struggle with assignments that come easy to me, but I need to understand that just because it's easy for some and not me doesn't mean I am any less smart, I could be better at a different section or class. I find that when I hear from others, especially teachers or my parents or any people who have a higher level of education than me, when they tell me that I am doing good it makes me feel better because my work and effort are noticed and appreciated. As it states on the mindtool website “Social persuasion – hearing from others that you're capable.” Reading this I realized that this is very true about me. I enjoy hearing from others how well I worked or how good I am at something it makes me feel motivated to continue to do good and push to do better to show them what I'm capable of, this also has a downside because I shouldn't rely on others validation to feel good because I should do good on these assignments for myself and my grade but sometimes it nice to hear it.

Question 4: Defense Mechanism

The defense mechanisms I tend to use are denial and intellectualization. I use denial a lot because I like ignoring how I feel in a situation or ignoring the situation entirely. This isn't healthy because just because you bottle up your emotions doesn't mean you won't have to deal with them. Bottling them up isn't healthy because you keep it in until it drives you insane and you explode. I struggle with intellectualization because I feel if I ignore how I feel it will go away and it never happens. I think about how if I care too much people will judge me and think I'm being overly sensitive. I struggled a lot with learning to accept how I feel and feel validated about it because I shouldn’t invalidate how I feel for the benefit of others. I had a friend who made every situation about herself or would tell me I was being dramatic about a situation. I agree maybe she was going through something but that doesn't mean you can take it out on me. So when I was telling her about how I was feeling and she shut me down and invalidated it I knew she wasn't someone I wanted around because a good friend wouldn’t do that. A good friend would listen and comfort you, not judge you.

Question 5: Best Information

From chapter 13 the best piece of information would be on page 447 would be the dissociative disorders. This really is fascinating because of the way the human brain can just disassociate and you can just do things without even thinking about it. That is just so cool to me because it has happened to me during school. I just zone out and somehow I'm leaving and I have no memory of the whole day. I never really thought this was an actual disorder and was just daydreaming or zoning out. I think this needs more awareness because people need to know this isn’t just zoning out but a real disorder.

Question 6: Topics I Found Interesting

Two topics that really stood out to me were the disorders, especially anxiety, OCD, and dissociation from Chapter 13 and sleep from Chapter 5. I enjoyed learning more about the disorders because I was always curious about them and their effects and after reading more I realized how much deeper they are than just what people talk about, especially anxiety and OCD. I never thought it could be that serious for others and now after reading more, I am more educated. I never thought about how important sleep was as I would get like four hours of sleep a night. I didn't even think twice but after learning more about it and the effects of lack of sleep deprivation I realized how important it is to get a good amount of sleep.

Question 7: Course Feedback

Starting this course I felt a bit anxious because this was both my first time taking psychology and an actual college class besides College 101. I felt very nervous about the workload and whether I would be able to understand the lessons and gain the knowledge given but after talking to the teacher during the oral exam I realized how asking questions or needing extra help isn't a bad thing if anything it's beneficial. I do think we didn't have enough time on the chapters to understand but I adapted and got used to the quick pace we had and realized this is how college is. This class was fun as I always loved learning about the mind. It was always so fascinating to me. I enjoyed this course very much.
