- (Lasted from the mid 18th century to the mid 16th century B.C.E.)

- The Shang learned a variety of different skills that were important to their growth. They learned how to work with animal bones, jade, wood, and ceramics.
- The Shang kept livestock such as pigs, sheep, and dogs. They also grew crops such as wheat and rice.
- Similar to other ancient civilizations, there was a social pyramid. The king was at the top, right below them were warriors, then priests, and people with common jobs such as merchants or farmers.

- The classes had different routines when regarding funerals. The kings were buried in large tombs with objects that could be useful in the afterlife. The lower classes sometimes did not even get a tomb and were disposed in wells.
- King Zhou was the leader at the time that the dynasty fell and it was likely due to a battle since their army was worn down from previous battles.

- The Qin Dynasty started in 221 B.C.E. and ended in 202 B.C.E.
- The Qin began as guards of the Zhou building and they were able to gain power (in the western region of China) through this.
- They could not gain control over the eastern part of China, though.
- They were able to conquer a number of non-Chinese tribes that were living near the Huang He River.
- The Chu and Jin were the only ones able to give the Qin the ruling title for their region.
- While the other groups were fighting for power, the Qin were able to sit back since the were not close to the battlefield, and remain alive.
- They also stayed alive because they were so young and all of there followers were mostly on the same page, so they were able to develop a government system. They later tried to adopt eastern civilians who were able to help their government evolve.
- Xiaogong was the Qin ruler that worked with Shang Yang to establish new changes.
- Shang Yang worked on enforcing the law for all classes and the highest nobility should be given to the ones who served their state the most. This made the nobles at the time, furious.
- Shang Yang heavily encouraged agricultural development. Farmers were rewarded when new hires were from out of state and when they turned a wasteland into farmland. This resulted in more crops and took away workers from neighboring counties.
- Xiaogong's death resulted in Shang Yang being put to death, as well.
- After the death of the leaders, the Zhou were weak so many thought they should all come together. This being said, they could not agree on one universal ruler.
- In 325 B.C.E., Xiaogong's son, Huiwang claimed the throne. Fifty years later, the Qin held the power over all of their neighbors.
- The Qin Dynasty fell when Shi Huangdi died because his most loyal fans were killed.

- The Shang were the first group to use bronze for ceremonial containers, weapons, and chariots.
- Shang were the first known group to have their own Chinese language.
- They engraved characters in bronze and on animal bones.
- They would keep records on the bones about information about the political timelines. They would also attempt to predict the future by writing a question on the bones and breaking it. These were called oracle bones.
- Similar concepts were not found because they were unable to survive being buried for multiple centuries. It is also thought that the ones on silk or books made of bamboo were burned by the emperor at the time of 100 B.C.E.
- Political records were also written on animal bones to keep tack of the different rulers.

This made the nobles at the time, furious.
- Shang Yang's (arguably) biggest change was how he changed the government. Specific villages and towns were separated into counties, and further into districts.
- To encourage a higher population, a male who was not the master of a household was taxed double. This resulted in young children to move out to own their own households.

- in 221 B.C.E., Shi Huangdi (also known as Qin Shi Huang) claimed the power and titled himself the "First Sovereign Emperor". He was the final ruler.
- He got rid of the feudal system and sent officials to different local towns to supervise. And others were sent overseas to do the same.
- China was divided into almost forty prefectures that became traditionally known as the Chinese boundaries.
- He also built highways to transfer his military. These were built by hundreds of thousands of workers who also built stations and signal towers along the way. This was later named The Great Wall of China.
- Many died while they were forced to work which made wealthy men have to move to the capital.
- Hundreds of scholars were murdered for criticizing the emperor and his policies.
- Shi Huangdi made sure all books (except ones regarding the topics of law, farming, and herbal medicine) were destroyed. This gave him the title of one of the cruelest Chinese tyrants and history.
- Shi Huagdi would disagree with the title of tyrant because he salvaged a corrupted age, simplified the writing system, and improved the law.
- He was afraid of death and would pray to gods and try to find medicines that would give him the gift of immortality.
- He died in 210 B.C.E. and when his tomb was discovered, over six thousand life-like soldiers were found to be buried with him.
