This opening line is very fitting considering the initial look of the book. It catches you off guard. This line gives you a look at how dark and twisty the story will become but, more importantly the depth in which we will be going into this

Is described as a red-haired bubbly girl who runs a floral shop. Her mother describes her as bold and brave, as well as compassionate. Although, she falls into a similar pattern much like her mother did she breaks out of it for the well-being of her daughter. So, she can be the role model she never had.

This quote triggered Lily and was a turning point and a point of realization for Lily.
