The same question came up every time about what to do with students that do not have access to smartphones.
I have also showed one or two additional teacher google expeditions, which is a nifty app I have come across. Might be worth looking into.

I showed off Cardboard to the following staff at AAA during Instructional Improvement Day:

Laura DiLoreti
Richard Edwards
Andrew Kussin
Jennifer Pluck
Maureen Stone
Lisa Daykin
Rebecca Green-Palotta
... along with others.

Everyone was impressed with the technology. Mrs. Green-Palotta said that a set of Cardboard viewers had been ordered for AAA. They were particularly excited for use in Science and Social Studies classes. One teacher asked if there were plays available to be viewed via Cardboard for ELA.

An objection raised was that students have to supply their own devices and download the apps on their own. Several teachers wondered if the students and parents were savvy enough to make sure that they were downloading the apps over wifi, instead of eating up their cellular data allowance. The thought was that some parents might come after the district if they incurred overages. I did mention that the applications will EVENTUALLY be able to be downloaded over the APS wifi network.

Current policy restricts the use of cell phones during class. There were questions whether use of Cardboard might lead to a reduction of discipline regarding usage during other times.

Some teachers wondered if they were supposed to use their own phones if the student did not have one to use. Given the environment at AAA, they were reluctant to do that. A suggestion was that the district procure a supply of iPod
Touches for this application. (Which kind of defeats the purpose of Cardboard as a cheap solution.)

Another observation is that the devices supplied by the students were likely to be damaged in some way. Cracked screens would have a major impact
on the ability to effectively use the viewer.

All the teachers mentioned the side-effect of motion sickness.

One teacher was concerned about the radio emissions from the device and worried that we are all getting cancer from using cell phones for too long so close to our brains. ?!?!

So, the teachers were excited by the possibilities, but did raise some objections.

Everyone I showed this to were impressed with it. They see it as a great way to get students engaged. It's a way for students to explore places that they may never get to. However, one concern is having enough material to keep them engaged. Once the wow factor is gone it will be important to have enough subject matter to keep them engaged. The librarian is more interested in having students on the creative end of virtual reality. Other concerns are apps taking up space on phones, data usage when virtual resources on sites are blocked by the district. Also some (like me) are bothered by motion. Nobody I showed it to were able to get thru the entire roller coaster ride. - Mark Jatich
