I am the 4th-5th grade elementary school counselor. The topic I chose is to work with for student success is the 504 requirements that are implemented into a school setting with students who have a learning disability such as: ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia, or shows signs of reading difficulty. My audience I will be focusing on training the Underwood Elementary campus which are 4th-5th grade teachers. This training will consist of informing the teacher's on the IEP plan that will be given to them and implemented into the child's educational learning environment. I chose this topic of study because this plan is individually designed for each child depending on their needs and weaknesses. This plan will help the child become successful in school and will also help the teacher better understand the tools the child needs to achieve their goals.

The counselor's main role at the elementary level is being the 504 coordinator for that campus. Therefore, in order to meet the required needs of a student the school counselor is in charge of providing services for any child who is in the dyslexic program, has ADHD, reading difficulty, and etc. The school counselor then assesses the child and meets with a committee in order to put an IEP (Individual Education Plan) into place for each child.
1. The 504 process begins when a child has been referred by a parent, teacher, or doctor
2. Once the student has been identified and then the coordinator requests work samples or a doctor's note in order to determine the needs for the child
3. When that is collected those who have an educational interest in the child meet and discuss accommodations that need to be implemented to help the child be successful.
The 504 IEP's are vital when it comes to student success in the classroom. By law, the 504 coordinator is to put a plan into place and once the committee meets and agrees on a plan, the teacher is to utilize the plan and follow the individualized objective depending on the students needs.
Interviewed: Traci Jordan, School Counselor, Underwood Elementary.

In addition, the child was also required to receive additional tutoring support. The parents were still not satisfied with the support the child was receiving and requested the child have an assigned qualified sign-language interpreter. Because the parents of the child felt that the individual was not achieving her highest potential in each class this case went to court and was ruled in the parents favor that the school district needed to provide the sing-language interpreter.

Board of Educ. v.
