Reflection on EPIC Didactic Planning – Phase 3

Didactic Unit (Phase 3)

Here you will find a complete didactic unit designed for English language learners, integrating communicative skills and modern pedagogical strategies in a meaningful context.

Didactic Planning as a Strategy to Improve Educational Processes – EPIC Model Reflection

Didactic planning is a key tool in educational work because it allows the teacher to organize and give direction to the teaching-learning process. Thanks to this process, it is possible to guide pedagogical actions in a coherent, purposeful, and meaningful way. The EPIC model (Explore, Practice, Interact, and Create) enriches didactic planning by structuring the class into four progressive phases that promote active and conscious learning.

Each phase of the EPIC model fulfills a pedagogical purpose that strengthens the educational process: in the Explore phase, students connect prior knowledge with new content; in Practice, they reinforce what has been learned through exercises and structured activities; in Interact, they develop their communication skills and exchange ideas with peers; and in Create, they demonstrate their understanding through meaningful projects. This sequential structure not only improves student motivation but also promotes the development of key competencies for academic and personal life.

Personally, I believe that implementing the EPIC model makes it easier to plan didactic sequences that are dynamic, inclusive, and contextualized. It encourages the teacher to be a reflective guide who adapts to the needs of the group, taking into account the diversity of learning styles. Furthermore, it provides the student with the opportunity to be an active subject in their own learning process, making each activity not only an academic exercise but also an opportunity to build knowledge with purpose and creativity.

Teacher’s Role Reflection

This reflection analyzes the evolving role of the teacher in the era of Artificial Intelligence, based on a critical reading of the AGI article and personal teaching perspectives.

Reflection: Redefining the English Teacher's Role in the Age of AI

The article "Redefining the Teacher's Role in Education through Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)" emphasizes how technology is transforming traditional education. It explains that AI can automate tasks such as grading, content creation, and assessment. However, it also highlights that teachers remain essential because they bring emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, and human connection to the classroom. This means that rather than being replaced, teachers need to adapt and evolve alongside AI.

In the context of English language teaching, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Quizlet can be powerful allies. These tools support students by providing instant feedback, personalized learning, and creative ways to practice language skills. Nevertheless, it is the teacher who guides the learning process, motivates students, and selects appropriate strategies depending on each learner’s needs. Teachers must now become facilitators, digital mentors, and critical thinkers who know how to integrate technology meaningfully.

Therefore, I believe that the English teacher's role should be redefined not by replacing traditional functions but by expanding them. Educators should be prepared to use AI to enrich their lessons while continuing to provide emotional support and human interaction. Teachers are irreplaceable because they inspire, encourage, and understand their students. In this new era, the best classrooms will be those where AI and teachers work hand in hand to offer a more dynamic, inclusive, and effective learning experience.

Lesson Planning, Learning Objectives & Outcomes, and the Communicative Approach

This section presents the development of Phase 2, which focused on deepening our understanding of essential pedagogical foundations in English language teaching. The activity began with an individual exploration of Unit 1 content, followed by a collective analysis of key theoretical components, such as:

The purpose and characteristics of learning objectives and learning outcomes.

The structure and relevance of lesson planning.

The principles of the communicative approach in language teaching.

Based on this foundation, we collaboratively created SMART learning objectives and measurable outcomes for three learning scenarios: vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice (past simple), and speaking through role-play.

Additionally, a complete lesson plan was developed using the institutional format, incorporating effective sequencing, communicative activities, and appropriate assessment tools. Finally, each group member conducted a participant observation of a UNAD class (via video recordings or real-time sessions) and completed a Field Diary to reflect on classroom dynamics and teaching strategies observed.

This phase encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and practical application of didactic knowledge, laying a solid groundwork for future instructional planning.
