Containment is control systems in operation. There is seemingly a lack of constant monitoring of those monitoring the contained. We will see it in the news again. People of containment are not always treated fair. How do you validate the zoo? Are the animals in the zoo prisoners? Perhaps they are mentally ill.

I find it so disturbing that people seems so able and eager to turn imprisoned and contained individuals into the abject or the 'other' rather than considering the patterns of marginalised groups and identities that are being consistently over-represented in prison populations. It seems like a form of willful ignorance, with the aim of ignoring the many societal and institutional inequalities, discriminations and other factors that occur to put someone in their situation. Perhaps some people realise that to challenge this system from which they benefit and are privileged would mean the possibility of disadvantaging themselves, so instead it is easier to identify those being contained as 'deserving' individuals who 'chose their path'.

Containment has grown and developed with our morals and ethics in society which have been shaped by politics, crisis and our understanding of how to manage crime and criminals. I find it interesting how one perception of containment may have been demolished or closed, such as Female Factories in Launceston. Such places have reopened as Gaols because that became a more appropriate method of incarcerating criminals according to society and the changes over time.

Guilty until proven innocent? Pamela Currs article does well to elicit a strong response from the reader regarding the painted picture of such a facility. It is just like, if not worse than a prison. Considering they are seeking “asylum”. However, in order to protect citizens of this country, I can also acknowledge and appreciate fully the scrutiny they are under in order to protect us from what might be a dangerous minority. However, can there not be a more humane way to deal with this issue? Why does it take 22 months to clear someone as being ‘safe’ for our country? What about our moral obligation to our fellow humans seeking our help? Are we not morally obligated to help them despite the consequences? Is this not the philosophical question that should be considered when making these decisions?

After reading Vickie Roach’s story and through the media’s voice, it becomes apparent that there is not a lot of rehabilitation for prisoners released from prison. Prisoners face difficulty re-integrating back into society, can struggle to find a job and can experience psychological and medical issues. Through the lack of satisfactory rehabilitation, it is becoming more likely that this can lead to an ex-prisoner to recidivism. Is there a way that modern containment can use the resources we have readily available, especially in Australia, to help the ex-convicted live as a productive member of society and prevent a relapse of criminal behaviour?

It's interesting that we contain and isolate people from society as a form of punishment because they do not behave the same as everyone else. By pulling them even further from what is deemed "normal", we are causing them to lose touch with what is indeed normal. Therefore from then on, it is "normal" to not be given a choice, it is "normal" to be treated like you are beneath everyone else. We are literally pulling away their self esteem and the last bit of humanity they have left then expecting them to go out there and act "human".

I think of myself as a prison abolitionist. It's impossible to separate modern containment from its roots as a tool for controlling and subjugating marginalised populations/individuals. Can anything good/valuable ever be made of a system so thoroughly grounded in cruelty and violence? I honestly do not think so. Also it, like, doesn't actually work. So there's that.
