Totalitarian Government/society

A totalitarian government is a government that does not allow any other opinions in their society and has dictatorial control over many aspects of life. In the story 1984, there are aspects of the government that are like a totalitarian government. One aspect of the government in 1984 that is like a totalitarian government is that there are telescreens. Telescreens are devices in which the government can see and hear everything their citizens do and they use these to find people who are disloyal to their society. When they do find these people, they act immediately; sending the thought police so that no people know of their crime. Another aspect of the government in 1984 that is like a totalitarian government is that they process all information that goes out to the public so that whatever they say is the truth. They cherry-pick what they want their people to hear and see and read. This helps them mold the minds of their people to think what they want them to. These are examples because these both show how far the government in 1984 is willing to go to make sure they have complete control of all of their citizens.

Main Characters

There are two main characters in the book 1984, Winston Smith and Julia. Winston Smith is a middle-aged man, around the age of 39; he works in the Ministry of Truth and lives in a apartment complex of a sort called the Victory Mansions. Winston is a loner that secretly hates Big Brother; the government that controls his society. Julia on the other hand is younger and works in a more industrial job in the Ministry of Truth. She's not quite beautiful but Winston loves her all the same.
A quote that I think reveals something about Winston is, "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!" (Pg. 286) I think that this reveals so much about him because, during the whole book he believes in one thing. But during this moment he snaps and gives in to Big Brother. He betrays Julia and I think that this shows that Winston didn't really believe in his hatred of Big Brother, because if you truly believe in something you will not let that belief go.
A quote that I think reveals something about Winston is, "Sometimes," she said, "they threaten you with something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, ‘Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to So-and-so.’ And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn't really mean it. But that isn't true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there's no other way of saving yourself, and you're quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don't give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself." (Pg. 292) I think this shows how much Julia was upset with him because she felt that he sort of played her. She thought he truly loved her but she was fooled. She felt like she was being toyed around with and everything she ever thought about him was a lie.

Ideal Society

My ideal society is one where every ethnicity, gender and sexuality is accepted and the leader isn't overbearing and controlling. No mean slurs are used and everyone is treated equally. In this society no one is required to serve in the military and everyone can lead the life that they want to lead. Parents are kind and understanding, bad drugs do not exist and Trump does not exist. The government is a Federal Parliamentary Democracy with a Prime Minister. This is my ideal society.

Article and Comparison

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/tch_wjec/germany19291947/3waryears1.shtml

I chose this article because it tells you what it was like in Germany during World War II because I think that time and place relates more to the story. There was rationing, a war, and propaganda was used. Although I think that the biggest similarity between the book and Germany during World War II is that a both had strong, prominent and influential leader.

This historic time affected many different people like how the historic change in the book affected many people in Oceania. During this time in World War II the government rations on many things like their ration on food, in 1939 they started rationing clothes, people were only allowed to use warm water twice a week, they rationed soap and there was no toilet paper. The result of all this rationing was the black market. This is much like in the book 1984, although in the book they have rations on many more items. Such as chocolate, cigarettes, gin, food and many other things.

Another thing that World War II and 1984 have in common is that they both burned literature that didn’t align with their thinking. During World War II the Nazis would go around different universities and would burn books in a huge bonfire. In 1984 they took it to the extreme. The government destroyed any real evidence that wrote about life before their time and completely rewrote it. The Ministry of Truth would go through all of the out-going news and burn the information they didn’t like and rewrite it; within a matter of seconds what was the truth would be gone.

Lastly they both tortured people to get the answers they wanted. During World War II the Nazis would perform science experiments on some of the people they captured. They were obsessed with perfection and would try and figure out how everyone could have the ideal features, blonde hair and blue eyes. But in 1984 they would torture people in the Ministry of Love so that they would confess their crimes. They would do unspeakable things until the person snapped and gave in to Big Brother’s totalitarian ways.

In conclusion this time period in history aligned very much with the book 1984. They both rationed many things, like food, soap, etc. They both destroyed literature that didn’t align with their thinking, and they both tortured people to get the answers they wanted.

I believe the theme of the book is nothing is as it seems. I think this because in the book there is lot of things that are deceiving. The MInistry of Truth is rewriting everything into lies, I think that Winston didn't actually love Julia and O'Brien lead them to believe that he was on their side. It's almost as if everyone has a veil over them hiding their true purpose
