1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?   
We study literature to obtain deeper meanings of books, magazines, biographies, and ultimately the world around us, we study literature by reading books, novels, and extracts of all genres to learn about writing styles, important life lessons, etc. We study TTTC because the book is full of important life lessons and is ultimately a coming of age/discovering one's identity novel that many high schoolers can easily relate to.


2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are affected by literary texts all the time in all aspects of society for example if you read a news article that says not to drink coffee because it is bad for you then you will less likely to drink coffee. Other examples would be reading history books to learn about events from the past, social media, cook books, etc. because those are all forms of literature.We are impacted by TTTC in many ways, for one emotionally because O'Brien is able to put his audience in his shoes and feel the inner turmoil he was going through. We are also impacted because it expresses the hardships of confining to societal norms and doing what would look best which is an issue that many teenagers deal with(finding themselves and making those right decisions).


3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
Meaning is transformed in TTTC, O'Brien takes the true meaning of his novel and incorporates it in all parts of the different short stories to emphasize how meaning is/can be interpreted in multiple ways, shapes, and forms. That was ultimately O'Brien's goal in writing the book was to show how one's truth is really based on the amount you're willing to believe and accept.


4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure and style of TTTC greatly affects how O'Brien's meaning is being interpreted because the chapters within the book build his message and story as a writer, he used each chapter as a stepping stone to further elaborate on the why(why he wrote the book in the first place).

Reflection: I had a lot of fun reading TTTC and doing the summer assignment I think I was really able to analyze the message O'Brien was conveying and interpret it in many ways. I feel like I had some very strong comparison sources within my ebook that I am proud of as well.

  1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? I think historical context is extremely important to know when reading a text because it will give you the appropriate time frame that matches the author's diction, message, etc.
  2. How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own?
  3. To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture? Literary texts often offer insight into other cultures, this being that many authors are different and write about their backgrounds which gives the audience a chance to learn about a particular culture through the perspective of someone that lives in it, so I think there is a lot that you can learn from different texts especially since they're not limited.
  4. How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? It changes over time because with time things and lessons become more valuable and there are a lot of important messages in literature that are looked at over and over again through generations, fitting to match the new batch of students/people and how it relates to them given the society they are presented with. In other words the meaning of literary texts grow and evolve over time but continue to gain value as new generations interpret the meanings.

How did you do during the Harkness discussions? What feedback did you receive? I feel like I did well during the harkness discussions I just wished I had more time to share my ideas, as a group we were told to go in depth more and to stop regurgitating what was already discussed. I feel like something I did well was changing the topic and offering insight on something we hadn't yet looked at.

There are connections throughout most of Hughes' poems but one that is very defined is the connection to both the rivers and how slavery is this never ending river full of death, injustice, jim crow, etc.

How does Hughes' poems connect to other works we've read? I actually saw a connection to TTTC because in both texts the author/speaker is struggles in the environment given to them and they also struggle to find themselves.

How does Hughes' poetry connect to our world today?     1. How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel. 
    The structure and style of a literary text greatly affects the meaning because often times authors will add new perspectives or use analepsis to persuade the reader that a certain message is either extremely important or not so much. Morrison uses shifting views and stream of consciousness to show that this story affects the past, present, and future and that it should never be forgotten due to that.

    Time and Space

    1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.
    It is extremely important to have historical context so that readers will understand the timeframe and audience that the message is being directed to, for example the story of Margaret Garner is referenced multiple times to reiterate that the incident occurred in the past however it still effects present and future generations.

    Beloved connects to a lot of Hughes' since most of the poems have the same timeframe of Beloved and the historical and culture aspect of both texts line up, the messages are different however they are both related to slavery, memories of the past, and how past actions affect the future. Beloved also connects to TTTC in the sense of the soldiers and Paul D because they both showcase their PTSD and masculinity in the tasks/journeys they had to overcome. Both authors used analepsis and multiple perspectives to shed light on the traumas the men faced in their pasts.

    How does Beloved connect to our world today?
    It connects to our world today because it brings awareness to PTSD, slavery, and memories that most try to forget since they are uncomfortable to mention in most scenarios. The book demonstrated how slavery evolved over and when it finally was over, this relates to many events today because there is a process for everything. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? The novel specifically addresses issues of gender through the use of perspective, Beloved has three main female characters who build off one another's thoughts/ideas of the past and present to ultimately create one powerful female presence that influences the interpretation of the meaning and persuades readers to understand the importance and magnitude of Margaret Garner's story.     How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
    The notion of a "classic" literary text is very valid. Persepolis is "literary" because the novel details the events of her life through pictures so essentially it is just a visual memoir. It is also literary since it tells more than a story, it is a bildungsroman as well.

    What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
    Persepolis showed me that during the revolution the people's objective is to either flee or stay and fight even in the midst of war and harsh treatment.
