In 1840, only 20% of London's children went to school while children of the poor had to help families, often working long hours in dangerous trades for very low pay. They were sent to work from the age of 3 and were employed as chimney sweeps, or to work in coal mines, crawling through tunnels too narrow and low for adults; they also worked as messengers, street cleaners, matchmakers. The working hours were long, about 16 hours a day, while many girls worked as prostitutes (most of them between 15 and 22 years of age).
