In the novel The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, she tells the story of Starr Carter and her struggles juggling her life in two different worlds. In one part of her life she is Starr the daughter of Big Maverick, she feels disconnected from most of the people around her since she doesn’t interact with them outside of working at her job. People also know her as the witness to Khalil’s death and as the only person who can do something to give him justice. In the other part of her life she is Starr Carter, the one of few black people who goes to Williamson Prep. She tries her best to not act ghetto in school and tries to be a calm person so people don’t label her as a crazy black girl.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes drama books. This book is filled with heavy subjects like racism, police brutality, and gang violence so I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t like these subjects. The book is good overall because of how the author writes these characters and how she makes them feel like real relatable people and not just some perfect creation. I believe this book is mainly character driven rather than plot driven so if you like these types of story’s I would recommend it.

One aspect of the book that was disappointing was how Hailey’s story that seemed like a pretty good plot point was cut short. This plot point put Starr through a lot of pain as she was losing a close friend throughout her life. In some parts of the book it put Starr in a lot of distress making her question whether or not to drop her as a friend. Angie simply ended this plot point by having Starr end the friendship over text. I believed that it would’ve had Starr have some sort of emotional reaction or this would make her grow as a character, but it didn’t it simply just ended.

One area of the book I liked was the roles of the antagonists. My favorite antagonist has to be the Justice system since they are a thorn in Starr’s side that she has no control over. The justice system puts fear into Starr that they will warp the truth she tells to make her a bad person, this teaches her to stop being scared and to fight back against them to get the truth out. King and his gang are also good since they are simply there to instill fear into Starr that if she says too much they’ll hurt her loved ones. Hailey, although not as good as the others, teaches Starr to grow up and to let go of the past no matter how much it hurts.

I expected the book to be story driven but was surprised to find out it was character driven. Every chapter had me wanting to read more and more to find out what the characters were going to face next. Some parts of the book had me feeling the different emotions the characters felt. The plot of the book was pretty good although some parts of the story would go by so fast so the story itself didn’t make me want to read more.
