Nella dan is characterised as something that is all bright and warm, and much larger than she appears inside the ship. Inside we see that it is full of stairs, floors cabins, and various other places to sit. We also see that it is a cozy place that is much better than where they are at the moment

At the top of p. 36 we see “tiny people … fairies … giant[s]. How does the remainder of this chapter continue to develop characterisation and demonstration of relationships

The characterisation of “tiny people … fairies … giant[s].” reinforces facts/descriptions from the previous paragraph that the ship was massive, big and warm and cozy inside. this is also perhaps because the kids are tiny even in proportion to a normal adult so it increases the difference more. They are "like tiny people, like fairies..." also shows the mood of the chapter is lifted a little, and Isla's brother is mentioned a few times. Her brother is happy after he meets Soren. His brother "really laughed" and Isla "saw his eyes, how big they were". At the end of the chapter it is shown that her brother is in a good mood as he said that he would "share the chewing gum". A number of innocent, fun incidents again show the caring side of the 'giant' men and the lovely relationship between Isla and her brother

This is in contrast to how Isla describes the ships all lined up as "grey and clean and organised. Compartmentalised". The polysyndeton shows that Isla is excited to get on the Nella Dan.

As Isla goes inside the Nella Dan she uses polysyndeton again talking about the "many floors and cabins and corridors and outside decks..."

How does Parrett evoke a realistic setting?

During chapter 12 Parrett evokes a realistic setting by providing very small details of the setting and the Galley. Parrett is attentive to small but specific details that create a vivid spatial image of the galley. For example, a plausible action “pastries coming out the oven” is coupled with an aroma “sweetness in the air”, creating a sense of place that also is inhabited by realistic characters, kitchen staff, who are depicted in a manner congruent with that occupation.

He remembers the shock of the long days filled with hard work and no rest. He remembers that it is especially hard since you are very far away from home.
Unlike the beginning of this chapter, it ends on a melancholy note of homesickness, but more specifically depicts the loneliness of young sailors who are adjusting to working at sea, “so very far away from home”.

A charming vignette (brief, evocative description/account) is offered through the combined process of memory and childish innocence and awe on a ship that is "cosy and comfortable and lived in and loved." This is in stark contrast to "navy ships" that were "grey and clean and organised." Note the use of polysyndeton.
