John Gardiner and his family were the first people to settle the Boroondara district in 1837. In 1837, Robert Hoddle surveyed the area, and named it "the Parish of Boroondara." The area was thickly wooded, so it was named through the Woiwurrung language, meaning "where the ground is thickly shaded."
The first Local Government was the Boroondara District Road Board, formed on 11 July 1854 incorporating areas which were to become the City of Hawthorn, City of Kew and City of Camberwell.
