When a parent doesn't understand a subject or thinks that their child doesn't need to know about that subject they don't permit them to learn about it. When a child can't learn about real-life situations and are too sheltered it can affect them negatively in the future. They should be allowed to learn, in a safe way, about the dangers of the world so they can be better protected. Reading books containing these situations can be a helpful way to accomplish that.

If the focus is only on the teacher, it never addresses the book. Most of the time, a book is banned because of complaints reported by parents and not the students. Parents don't always understand what goes on in their child's head, what subjects they can handle/already know, or what they can relate to. When teachers allow certain books into their criteria it's because they are possibly beneficial to the students. The books taught will always help students grow in at least one area, whether it's as a student, as a person, or both. Books shouldn't be banned because of parent reports, and teachers deciding to teach these books, shouldn't have to face repercussions for teaching subjects that can help the kids.
