I agree with this quote by Howard Zinn because it emphasizes a choice we get to make on our perception of the world and the people around us. In our world today, saying that you have hope in such a controversial society may give you varying responses. Personally, I think being able to understand the bad but focusing on the good is all anyone can ever do. For example, if you were to focus only on the bad in this country/world, you would forget about the people who are making a difference - the one's you should be inspired by and following by making a difference yourself. In addition, in the last part of Zinn's quote, he mentions the future. I agree especially with what he says here because there is no point in worrying yourself with negative scenarios if you are unable to see the good in what you have right now.

And if we choose to live in that moment how we want to, "ridding" ourselves of the bad around us then we don't have to hope for some "grand utopia future". Because right then and there you are in that utopia.

I agree with Howard Zinn. I agree with his thought that we have decide how we want to see the world, and the people that surround us in our lives. I believe that if we chose to focus in the negatives, they will outweigh the positives, and our lives will be consumed by negativity. We need to create a balance between acknowledging the positives but also the negatives. If we only focus on the positives, and overlook the negatives, then history could repeat itself. Also, I do believe that we have had a "history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness". Although there has been and will continue to be negativity and cruelty, we need to look at the positivity and compassion that comes out of these situations, and show it through actions.

Howard Zinn's quote reflects the view of optimisim, or so that no matter how bad our past was we always have the ability to influence the future. Furthermore, agreeing with his statement I do believe society being built on the idea of a utopia, has to see into the events in which history proved civilization can thrive. But, not mentioned in this quote, I also believe to be a functioning society, people must look into the bad of past historical events. Though, like Zinn said they may cause us to lose the ambitions to push forward, it may also save us in the respect that pushing forward in that area could cause devastation.

Along with Zinn, I believe that, generally speaking, if we choose to focus on all of the bad things that have happened, that will outshine the good. Even though so many bad, cruel, and corrupt things have occurred throughout human history, there's also been incredible and amazing actions that have brought civilization to where it is today. Our actions as individuals also influence our society and civilization. One negative action can snowball into something much larger, just as one small positive action can help to bring us one step closer to the successes that we desire. Simply put, we should learn from the negative and expand upon the positive.

We need to remember what good we did so we can continue that and the wrongs to fix them. I agree that even the smallest acts of kindness aid our future, but I disagree with when he said that if all we see the worst then we are then incapable of making an effort to change it. Even though someone sees cruelty, they still have to capacity to change that, or at least try. I loved what Zinn opened with, saying that being hopeful

I do agree for the most part that our view on life and what joys and/or difficulties it brings us, will point to the direction of your future. However, I don't believe it is as simple as that.
