Why Tech?

For so many reasons. For starters, it saves time that can be allocated elsewhere. You can use technology to give voice thread feedback on student work, instead of writing it all done that way it is highest leverage. You can also schedule parent teacher conferences so that parents can sign up with a time that works best instead of coordinating with two schedules. You can also record basic lessons that way you can play those instead of having to give the same lesson over and over again, wasting time. Tech can also allow you to connect with students to show them you understand technology is a big part of their life whether they want it to be or not. And you are helping them become better users as they become better learners as well.

Substitution is starting with the basics. It is a way for the teacher and the students to get acquainted with technology in the classroom. Substituting something already done in class on paper, with something done using tech.

Augmentation is a step up from substitution. It is taking something done on paper in class and amplifying it. For example, by providing diagrams or ways to draw pictures along with taking notes.

Modification is a way to make a class more collaborative. Students can save notes and come back to them; making them truly a process and a learning technique rather than just copying what the teacher writes down.

Redefinition is the most advanced step. It is creating something completely new for the classroom. Something that wouldn't have been there without technology's sake.

I appreciate that there are levels to this model. It helps people just starting out come to the realization that we all aren't going to be able to implement a huge project and find success. But, if we start small, there are ways we can incorporate technology (something our students enjoy) into class to make things more fun for them and more accessible and easy for us. While also being more environmentally friendly.

I really appreciated the "short on tech" segment of this reading. My school is not 1:1 or anywhere close to it. We got to the computer lab once or twice every quarter which is not near enough for students that have to take standardized tests on the computer five times a year. This section really got me thinking about ways that I can look into developing more opportunities for students to use technology as well as ways that I could potentially petition for more technology at my school.
