ISLAM , IMAN & IHSAN

Islam is a word with multiple connotations. It is derived from an Arabic stem that carries the meanings of peace and submission (to Allah the Exalted and Almighty). All Abrahamic religions were sent down to discipline mankind and prepare them spiritually, physically, and intellectually in the way that is best for the fulfilment of the mission they are created for. Allah’s Messages are meant to build up the human being fit for establishing civilization and creating prosperity in the world.

Iman in Islamic theology denotes a believer's faith in the metaphysical aspects of Islam. Its most simple definition is the belief in the six articles of faith, known as arkān al-īmān. If a Muslim does not believe in any one of the 6 pillars of Iman then they are not a true Muslim. The term Iman has been delineated in both the Quran as well as the famous Hadith of Gabriel. According to the Quran, Iman must be accompanied by righteous deeds and the two together are necessary for entry into Paradise.

Ihsan is an Arabic term meaning goodness or excellence, which is related to the word "goodness" (Arabic Husn). It is a matter of taking one's inner faith (iman) and showing it in both, sayings and actions, a sense of social responsibility borne from religious convictions. Ihsan also means to perfect, to excel or to show proficiency and excellence. Therefore it could be considered that the Arabic word ihsan has a dual meaning, goodness and excellence.

WHY OUR IMAN ALWAYS BE TESTED ?

Tests are not a punishment from the Almighty. Instead, they are a part of Allah's merciful planning. Through these tests and trials, He eliminates some of the mistakes and sins done in negligence. Similarly, it may be that the trials you're suffering through are actually a blessing in disguise.

1) We were created to worship Allah
We were created to worship Allah, and we all made a promise to do so before we were sent to earth. Tests are a means for us to fulfill this promise. In fact, they are a “sunnah” of Allah – i.e. tests are the means by which Allah distinguishes between us, because they help to expose faith and lack of faith. Allah states in the Qur’an:

‘Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident those who are false.’ [Qur’an 29: 2-3]

2) Allah tests us to purify us and wash away our sins.
The Prophet ﷺ said:“No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even if it were the prick of a thorn.” [Bukhari, Muslim].

So instead of seeing tests as a punishment from Allah, this shows that in fact, Allah wants to save us from punishment – i.e. the punishment of the Hereafter which is much worse than any test faced in this Dunya.

3) A test can sometimes replace a worse misfortune
A test can be a form of protection from something that might have befallen us. Or being deprived of something might, in fact, be saving us from something that is not good for us, even though we don’t have the knowledge to realise it at the time. Allah tells us: “Perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” [Qur’an 4: 19]. Therefore the test which might seem so awful to you at the time is, in fact, a blessing.

4) Tests are given to us to strengthen our iman (faith).
The Prophet ﷺ said:“The people who face the most difficult tests are the prophets, then the righteous, then those following them in degree. A person is tried according to his religion. So if there is firmness in his religion, then the trial is increased, and if there is a weakness, then it is lightened. Verily a trial remains with a servant until he walks the earth having no sin left upon him.” [Bukhari].

Allah wants to refine us, out of His love and mercy, so that we can attain not just Paradise but the highest rank of the Prophets and the righteous. Tests expose our faults and weaknesses to ourselves—and that awareness enables us to be more focused and proactive in rectifying those aspects of our character.

What is Khusyu’?
There are many definitions of khusyu’, according to Mufti Wilayah’s website, Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah Rahimahullah said: “Khusyu’ is the steadfast of the heart when facing Allah s.w.t., with humility and humbleness.” Meanwhile, Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali Rahimahullah stated the definition of khusyu’ is: “The origin of khusyu’ comes from the softness of the heart, the calm, and submissive state of one’s heart.”

Why Khusyu’ in Prayer is so Important?
Prayer is the second pillar of Islam and we as a Muslim need to worship in five times a day. Prayer in Islam is a way for the believers to communicate with Allah s.w.t.. It is an act of devotion, repentance, surrender, an expression of love, and servitude to Allah who is our creator and sustainer. It is also the key to success in our life in here and hereafter like in the verses mentioned before. As a Muslim must believe everything that Allah said and this is a true promise that Allah gives to His believer as stated in the Quran means: “It is a promise of Allah, and Allah never fails in His promise.” (Surah ar-Rum: 6)

How to Attain Khusyu’ in Prayer?

- Niat (intention). According to the lecturer at Islamic Science University of Malaysia, Ashwaq Kenali, said the most important to attain khusyu’ is niat. If someone only prays without having intention to be khusyu’, then his prayers are just in vain.

- Does not perform the prayer hurriedly and quickly. This act without toma’ninah in ruku’ and sujood is forbidden by the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w..

- Understanding the meaning of the verses recited during prayer. If a servant knows and understand everything that he recited in his prayer, it will help him in attaining khusyu’. In addition, it is also more appropriate when someone facing to Allah s.w.t., so his prayer are not just the movements without understand anything verses recited.

What is the meaning of ihram ?
- sacred state into which a muslim must enter to perform hajj or umrah .

Things To Do Before Wearing Ihram

Despite being an important aspect of the pilgrimage, not everyone is aware of how to wear Ihram for Umrah. Before wearing Ihram, pilgrims must:

Take ghusl, which is ablution or cleansing of the body.

After taking ghusl, he/she must apply fragrance or Itar.

Then he/she should trim nails.

How To Wear Ihram Clothing?

Umrah Ihram for men and women differs in many aspects, including clothing and rules & regulations.

- Ihram For Men

The Hajj and Umrah Ihram for men consists of two white unstitched sheets. The cloth used for Ihram is a simple unstitched plain white cloth that must be wrapped around the body. Also, it must be new, otherwise the Umrah will be invalid.

It is believed that the cloth worn as Ihram is used as a Kafan, which is the cloth wrapped around a person when he/she dies. Kafan should not have a single stitch according to the religious rules. The shoes should not be stitched either, hence it is advisable to wear slippers or flip-flops. Men must not cover their hair nor their face while in Ihram. While wearing Ihram, they should make sure that their calves must be visible.

- Ihram For Women

The Hajj and Umrah Ihram for ladies is very different as compared to men. Women can wear any ordinary dress for Umrah. They must cover their head but are forbidden to cover their faces. They are not allowed to wear burkha or niqab (an item of clothing used by Muslim women to cover their bodies) while in Ihram. A hijab (a cloth used by women in Islam to cover their hair) is mandatory. Their head dress must not cover their forehead. While in Ihram, women must not cut or trim nails or hair. Application of any type of fragrance or makeup is forbidden while being in Ihram.

Things to avoid in ihram

The things which are forbidden in ihram are things which a person must refrain from doing because of being in ihram. They are:

1.Shaving the hair of the head, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“and do not shave your heads until the Hady [sacrificial animal] reaches the place of sacrifice.” [al-Baqarah 2:196]

The scholars added to the prohibition on shaving the head, the prohibition on shaving any hair on the body, and on `.

2.Using perfume after entering ihram , whether on one’s clothes or body, or in one's food or when washing the deceased muhrim or in any way whatsoever. Using perfume is forbidden in ihram because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said concerning a man whose camel trampled him to death, “Wash him with water and lotus leaves and shroud him in his two garments, but do not cover his head or perfume him with hanut.” Hanut is a mixture of perfumes that is usually applied to the deceased.

3.Intercourse, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein (by assuming Ihram), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj.” [al-Baqarah 2:197]

4.Touching one’s wife with desire , because this comes under the general meaning of the phrase “he should not have sexual relations (with his wife)”, and because it is not permissible for the muhrim (person in ihram) to get married or to propose marriage – so it is more likely that it is not permissible for him to touch his wife with desire.

5.Killing game (hunting), because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning:

“O you who believe! Kill not the game while you are in a state of Ihram [for Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage)].” [al-Maidah 5:95]

As for cutting down the trees, that is not haram for the muhrim, except for those trees within the amyal, i.e., the boundaries of the sanctuary, cutting which is forbidden whether one is in ihram or not. Hence it is permissible to cut down trees in ‘Arafah even if one is in ihram, because the prohibition on cutting down trees is connected to the Haram (sanctuary), not ihram.

6. A prohibition which applies exclusively to men is wearing shirts, hooded robes, trousers, turbans and leather slippers, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about what the muhrim should wear. He said: “He should not wear a shirt, hooded robe (burnus), trousers, a turban or leather slippers.” But he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made an exception for one who cannot find an izar (lower garment or waist wrapper), who may wear trousers, and one who cannot find sandals, who may wear leather slippers.

These five things are described by the scholars as wearing sewn garments , so the common folk imagine that wearing sewn garments means wearing clothes that have stitching in them, but that is not the case. What the scholars meant by that is wearing clothes that are tailored to fit the body or part of it, such as shirts and trousers. This is what they meant. Hence if a person wears a rida (upper garment) or izar (lower garment) with patches on it, that is o.k., but if he wears a woven shirt with no stitching, that is haram.

7. One of the prohibitions of ihram that applies only to women is niqab , which refers to a veil that covers the face and leaves the eyes uncovered, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade that. A similar prohibition applies to the burqa’. When a woman enters ihram, she should not wear a niqab or burqa’ . It is prescribed for her to leave her face uncovered except when a non-mahram man passes by her, when she must cover her face and it does not matter if this cover touches her face.

Hikmah ihram
- to show a state of purity
- spiritual relationship with god established
- to test our iman and patience not to break ihram's rule
