The note of "breathing after a long while, coming out of the water, drowning or suffocating" ties the imagery to themes of survival and adversity. Likewise, "war-spies-traitors" was used to describe my idea of betrayal and distrust. These ideas demonstrate an effort to analyze the text's metaphors, personification, and other key features. However, while I recognized these elements, I could have gone deeper into how they connect to support the text’s more general themes or messages. For instance, relating the suffocation imagery to suspicion (can't trust others)might have enhanced my interpretation.

This means focusing more on how literary devices affect the overall meaning. By doing so, I could show a better analysis of media texts.

SOAL and Postmodernism

In reading Skin of a Lion, I struggled with the fragmented narrative structure, a key feature of Postmodernism. The story is not told in a linear way, and scenes are presented in a disjointed manner, which made it challenging to follow the plot and connect ideas. Postmodernism’s focus on fragmentation forced me to piece together the narrative from various perspectives and timeframes, which felt confusing at times. This method of storytelling, where meaning is often scattered and not fully resolved, required me to step away from conventional expectations of narrative flow. It was difficult to see the bigger picture, and I had not a great level of success with it.

Monologue - Hamlet

Part of comment: “Your voice was steady and menacing and your use of props (knife) was believable. Good use of gestures and the space.”

In my monologue performance, I showed confidence in my voice and used my body language to keep the audience engaged. One part of the feedback I got was: “Your voice was steady and menacing and your use of props (knife) was believable. Good use of gestures and the space.” This helped me see that I was able to control my voice and physical presence to create a strong feeling in the scene. I’ve never been particularly good at performing like this, so hearing this feedback showed me that I’ve improved a lot. While I was able to express the emotions of the character well, I also noticed that I need to work on my pacing. In the future, I want to slow down during important moments so the audience has time to feel the scene. This shows my growth in the Oral Communication strand because I was able to use my voice and body to communicate the character’s emotions clearly and effectively. Moving forward, focusing on pacing will help me communicate even better. Overall, this feedback made me realize I’m getting better at using my voice and body.

Short Works - Letters (Words and Symbols)

In my Short Works presentation, I showed improvement in making connections and explaining my thoughts clearly. The feedback mentioned that I had a “soft and gentle approach to delivery” and used my voice with “expression,” which shows I’m getting better at engagingly sharing my ideas. I also worked on understanding the poem’s themes, form, and style, explaining specific lines and why they worked well. This is something I struggled with before, but I was able to break down the text in a more thoughtful way this time. Looking back at my Monologue performance, I can see how much I’ve grown. In the Monologue, I focused on controlling my voice and body to create an impact, while in the Short Works presentation, I worked more on connecting with the meaning of the text. This shows my growth in being able to explain and express ideas better. Going forward, I still want to focus on improving my pacing so I can deliver my thoughts more clearly.
