I think this is because Leonard Mead faces the societal expectations of him and goes against it. When he does he is then ridiculed and punished for his inability to conform to expectations. The cop car states that if he had a partner it may have been an alibi, but since he is alone he must come with him. Leonard is being taken away just because he's doing an activity not every does.

The story is about a man called Leonard Mead with a very distinctive behavior in his world. In his world, most of the population stay inside and watch TV. Leonard doesn't like technology and likes to walk outside. It shows his "different way" that he doesn't do than other people. Walking one day, a police officer pulls up because he's very confused that someone is walking on the street, because most people stay inside watching TV. This shows that technology shouldn't be everything we should use, because it shows in this society that mostly everyone watching TV at home. The theme of the story is that technology is not only strategy to doing everything.

I would say if this short story had a theme it would be. Don't be afraid to be a little different. In the story, the main character Mr. Mead goes outside while everyone else is inside their house. A policeman comes to question Mr. Mead, and Mr. Mead gets taken away. But Mr. Mead was not afraid to go outside while everyone else is staying inside.
