In the following audio clip, Linda Rief explains how essential it is to talk to our students about their writing. One of the most important aspects in Writing Workshops is to interview the students and do a "check in" with them during their free writing time. Talking to our students and understanding where they come from helps us to become better Teachers! When we develop open communication with each individual student, we can aid them in becoming better writers.

Read aloud- Having time set aside for reading aloud within a writing workshop is highly beneifical for student that are stuck and/or need new ideas. Reading aloud is shown through mentor texts, student to student reading, and teacher to student reading.

Mini Lesson- A mini lesson is a short and to the point lesson that provides instruction in a skill or concept that the students will relate to a larger topic. Within each mini lesson it could be large or small groups depending on the reason for the lesson to take place. Mini lessons last about 10 to 15 minutes reinforcing different strategies, modeling technique, and meeting with the teacher.

Writing time- During writing time it is very important for the children to be comfortable while they are writing. Having the students move around the room helps them focus and changes up their scenery.
Sharing- When the students are close to being done with the writing process they will share. Sharing is one of the best ways to edit or keep the piece the same. While sharing students will either meet with each other and share what they have written, or they will meet with the teacher one on one or in small groups. Sharing with each other is very important for building a classroom community. It helps the children see into their peers in a different way.

During a writing workshop students practice multiple communications skills. While students are in the sharing process they practice listening to someone else in detail. During this process the students are working on speaking as well as listening. With speaking the children need to pay close enough attention in order to have a response to their peers writing. The writing workshop also helps with the students ability to communicate through writing. It helps them get organize their thoughts on paper in order to tell it to someone else. Lastly the writing workshop helps students view into each others lives at a more personable level.
