After you read a chapter, write any thoughts or analysis, like what we might write on the white board in class.
Questions to get you started: What is a new example of a dystopian detail? What was the most important part of the Chapter? What connections can you make to other parts of the text? Do you have any predictions? OR any thoughts you have while reading! Feel free to like and comment on each other's posts.

The book says that if a child is misbehaving, their parents may call them by their number. “Sometimes parents used them in irritation at a child’s misbehavior, indicating that mischief made one unworthy of a name.” (Lowry 63). It’s surprising that the parents are saying that if the child is misbehaving they aren’t close to them.

Chapter 7 ended on a cliffhanger! I predict that since the Chief Elder skipped over Jonas when she was calling out the Elevens to become Twelves, maybe Jonas will have to wait another year to become one. Maybe they’re going to give him an extra year as an Eleven because they think he hasn’t matured or learned enough, kind of like the treatment Gabriel is going to get (an extra year in the Nurturing Center). I think Jonas would feel very disappointed if this did happen. All of his friends would move up and he would be stuck with younger children that he didn’t know.

Earlier in the book it mentioned that Asher used the word “distraught” instead of “distracted” and the teacher pointed it out. In this chapter it is mentioned that he got the words “snack” and “smack” confused and got in trouble for it. I bet that this trait will be important again later in the story.

Lowry writes “Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory” (page 76). The Receiver of Memory is a job that only one person has had in Jonas’s community, so the job is very special. To be able to get this job people have to be Intelligent, have Integrity, Courage, Wisdom, and something called the Capacity to See Beyond. The Chief Elder also said that this job requires pain, which does not seem like a good job. I bet that this job is very difficult and it allows the Receivers to see what is wrong about their world.

The job of the Receiver is very rare and important, so people may be more polite to Jonas and respect him more.

I think that “the Capacity to See Beyond” is the ability to see “the Change” in the world. Jonas has seen the Change twice, one time when he was throwing an apple back and forth it changed and then when he just was selected it happened to the crowd. I think that maybe the Community is black and white because when it said that the apple went back to normal, It went back to an Indescript color, like a gray color. Because apples are not gray in real life, maybe stuff if black and white in the giver. “The Capacity to See Beyond” is something that not even the Receiver can describe.

A connection from this chapter to another part in the book is that when people apologize, everyone has to say that they accept the apology. In this chapter Lowry writes “‘I have caused you anxiety,’ she said. ‘I apologize to my community.’ Her voice flowed over the assembled crowd. ‘We accept your apology,’ they all uttered together. ‘Jonas,’ she said, looking down at him, ‘I apologize to you in particular. I caused you anguish.’ ‘I accept your apology,’ Jonas replied shakily.” (Lowry 75). I think that a reason people are forced to apologize is to show that what what they did was bad and everyone else has to say it’s ok even if they don’t really think it’s ok to show that it will be fine even if it won’t be.
