I predict that since the Chief Elder skipped over Jonas when she was calling out the Elevens to become Twelves, maybe Jonas will have to wait another year to become one. Maybe they’re going to give him an extra year as an Eleven because they think he hasn’t matured or learned enough, kind of like the treatment Gabriel is going to get (an extra year in the Nurturing Center). I think Jonas would feel very disappointed if this did happen. On page 65, the Chief Elder says “‘ You Elevens have spent all your years till now learning to fit in, to standardize your behavior, to curb any impulse that might set you apart from the group’ ‘But today we honor your differences. They have determined your future’”. The Chief Elder points out that the all of the elders have been trying to get everyone to be the same, and only on a few days of the year being different is good.

It mentions that Asher gets his words mixed up again. Earlier in the book it mentioned that Asher used the word  “distraught” instead of “distracted” and the teacher pointed it out. In this chapter it is mentioned that he got the words “snack” and “smack” confused and got in trouble for it. When Jonas says that he may see things that are “Beyond” I think that he’s talking about the changes that happened to the apple and crowd. To be able to get this job people have to be Intelligent, have Integrity, Courage, Wisdom, and something called the Capacity to See Beyond. The Chief Elder also said that this job requires pain, which does not seem like a good job.
