Upon receiving my master's degree in student development and leadership in higher education, I hope to my begin my dream career as an academic advisor at a university or college. I would love to help all types of students, particularly first-generation students. As one myself, I am able to relate to the struggles they are currently facing. My goal is to guide college students on the path to success and motivate them to reach their personal and academic goals.

[Image of Questions] (n.d.).

I interviewed the Interdisciplinary Advisor for the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Katie Johnston shared her insights on legal and ethical issues impacting her professional role and the students she serves.

#1: This generation of students and their families are very involved and hands on. It is crucial for student affairs personnel to firmly abide by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and only disclose student information to those who are eligible.

#2: Campus safety is an upmost priority at UNT. Staff attend trainings regularly to be knowledgeable about the Jeanne Clery Disclosure Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. This federal law requires universities to disclose any information about crime related incidents on or around campus and security information.

#3: Freshman college students are made aware at the start of their college career about the extensive background checks they will have to undergo if pursuing a degree in education. Student teachers interact with a vulnerable population of young students and the university's and TEA's main concern is to keep the children involved safe.

#4. A common legal and ethical issue that is seen at the college level revolves around students' conflict of interest when beginning practicums or internships. Students affairs staff should make it very clear to students that they must self-disclose this important information in order to remain within professional boundaries.

#5: As new legal issues arise in the education field, all members of student affairs staff should remain in constant communication and share any valuable information that may affect their students.

(K.Johnston, personal communication, June 8, 2018)

Upon my exploration of the NASPA website, I found a significant amount of articles about the protection of gender identity. The article "Judicial Proceedings Update: Trans Rights" by D. Ali (2018) stated that State and federal-level courts continue to challenge the rights of trans students regarding bathroom and locker room access. As a future student affairs professional, it is my responsibility to advocate for equity and inclusion amongst all students.

Through further review, I came across the topic of immigration and international students. The article "Judicial Proceedings Update: Immigration and International Students" by D. Ali (2018) states that earlier this year, President Donald Trump put in place the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Immigrant leaders took the issue to court and were successful in gaining permission for recipients of DACA to re-apply. Currently, we are waiting for the Supreme Court to make a final decision on the matter. This could directly affect the students I will serve in a drastic way. As an academic advisor, it is my job to offer the appropriate resources to help students complete their desired degree plan.

Upon my exploration of the AAU website, I found numerous articles about campus safety, specifically combating sexual violence. The article "AAU Campus Activities Report: Combating Sexual Assault and Misconduct" (n.d.) expresses AAU's sense of urgency and seriousness regarding this issue. Surveys were given to students at various institutions to determine the exact needs of their students on their campus. With the data gathered, the AAU is working diligently to offer more student support, education and trainings for staff, and effective resources to make a positive change. As a future student affairs professional, my top priority is the safety and well-being of my students, which is why I must be knowledgeable of all available supports for my students and how to handle these sensitive situations.

Through further review I stumbled upon an article of great interest, the "Higher Education Associations Express Grave Concerns with PROSPER Act" article. In this article, AAU along with dozens of other associations expressed their opposition for the Prosper Act as it would cause millions of students to face financial limitations. The bill would increase the cost of loans, eliminate grants, decrease the amount of aid, etc. ("Prosper Act", 2018). As a future student affairs professional, my students' educational career could be cut short. It is my duty to provide students with the best financial aid options in order to accommodate their needs.

After my exploration of various legal and ethical issues in the field of college student affairs, I am most interested in researching how higher education institutions are handling sexual violence dilemmas and what legal actions they take based on Title IX law. This topic highly interests me because I will be working with students directly, perhaps victims of this unfortunate crime. This issue affects millions of students across the United States. As a student affairs professional, we must work together to find solutions to this massive problem. Students must be made aware of prevention tips and resources available to them.

Through Angelo State University's library search, I discovered the article "Conveying Campus Sexual Misconduct Policy Information to College and University Students: Results from a 7-campus study" by S.J. Potter, K.M. Edwards, V.L. Banyard, J.G. Stapleton, J.M. Demers, and M.M. Moynihan. The researchers in this article conducted a study to determine which instructional method of reading the campus policy on sexual violence was most beneficial. The participants were made up of 1,195 students across seven colleges and were given surveys to evaluate their knowledge on campus resources, policy, and willingness to ask for help regarding sexual assault incidents (Potter et al., 2016). The results indicated that students who read the policy in class and participated in the discussion were most knowledgeable. The study helped educators understand the need for new and engaging ways to deliver this delicate material. If students are familiar with the campus policy and are held responsible for knowing the information then sexual violence issues may decrease. The ultimate goal is for all college campuses to be free of sexual assault and misconduct.

Potter, S. ., Edwards, K. M., Banyard, V. L., Stapleton, J. G., Demers, J.

Through an internet search, I came across the article "How Colleges are Battling Sexual Violence" by Beth Howard. In this article, universities and colleges across the country are now, more than ever, motivated to make a drastic change regarding sexual violence rates. Special initiatives such as online courses, bystander education programs, and preventative campaigns are designed to help students be knowledgeable about the issue (Howard, 2015). Higher education institutions are "cracking down" and have zero tolerance on the matter because Title IX, a civil rights law, prohibits gender discrimination. The seriousness of this issue is the driving force behind change. Most recently, the White House has asked colleges and universities to conduct anonymous surveys to determine how many students are victimized at each campus. The data could determine which campuses have found effective strategies to eliminate sexual violence.

Through personal review such as social media, news outlets, and internet searches, sexual violence on college campuses seems to be a rising issue. This topic is important to educators because they are actively involved in their students' lives and care for their overall well-being. Students will thrive academically and socially in a safe, welcoming, and positive environment. Thus, the need for in-depth interventions, readily available resources, and prevention campaigns is even greater. Students and their families should be confident in their decision to attend the university, knowing that all students will be protected.

The study conducted by S.J. Potter, K.M. Edwards, V.L. Banyard, J.G. Stapleton, J.M. Demers, and M.M. Moynihan shows the importance of using only appropriate and engaging tools to create awareness. The results indicated that students who were immersed in the policy material experienced positive changes in their attitudes and knowledge (Potter et al., 2016). Luckily more universities are creating new prevention tactics and stronger support systems, such as the University of Michigan and Michigan State with its Special Victim Unit (Howard, 2015).

If colleges and universities want to stay afloat and in compliance, they need to abide by all federal laws, including Title IX. This law denies discrimination on the basis of sex. As a students affairs professional, we will serve as advocates for justice and safety. These professionals must be knowledgeable and always up to date on the campus's course of action regarding sexual violence.
