Peter Beresford raises important points about the links between injustice and health. But would it be helpful to unpack different types of 'psych' approaches: i) organised mass manipulation of views, often using social media; ii) provision of healthcare and preventive advice by health professionals; iii) awareness that what we think and feel should not be necessarily taken at face value but rather questioned in the light of what the powerful and wealthy might want from the rest of us?

I am thinking that all presentations can be linked to the idea at the core of Psichiatria Democratica, which was a radical psychiatric experience in Italy led by Basaglia in the 1970s. According to this movement, psychiatry should consider society in the understanding and treatment of any indivisual affected by mental illness. This experience valued the person trying to avoid any label. Now, this is quite simplistic, but I believe that learning more about that experience can help to comprehend the present state of the British mental health system.

Psychiatry in its present form is treacherous for so many people. It needs a completely new paradigm in order to work with people who suffer with many social aspects in their lives. Hierarchical power is everywhere and we need to change the pattern to more equality, diversity and democracy - bring the people with lived experience into the discussions and research. Their voices are the most important when working with mental health/distressing emotions and suffering. Find out where their pain actually derives from before treatment is given. FIRST DO NO HARM .

Re issues for LGBTQ+ people, we may be affected even more than average by the shift towards austerity (leaving many of us reliant on others who may not fully accept us), removal of workplace and broader democratic rights and 'othering' promoted by Brexit and government's general appeal to a type of British identity which marginalises some minorities, with ill-effects on mental and physical health and inclusion. So stronger links with others campaigning on such issues (taking account that we belong to overlapping communities) may be helpful in achieving change
