Haiti in the 1990s was a dystopian society because it held a characteristic of survival. People in Haiti had to use different methods of adapting to survive their environment. Inside of "Children of the Seas" we see Haitian refugees that try to survive life on a boat. One of the main character claims that, "if only i could kill". She states this because fees the need to kill others to protect herself from being killed.

Haiti demonstrated a dystopian society in the 1990s because the government controlled everything that happened to the citizens. For example, in the doc it said "a group of students got shot in front of fort dimanche prison today. they were demonstrating for the bodies of the radio six, that is what they are calling you all." This shows that if someone is doing something the government doesn't like, they will kill them.

This shows that they made the people's choices and didn't give them their own options.

The mood in "The children of the Sea" is depressing because nobody has any hope for a better life anymore. One detail is, " if they come into a house and there is a son and mother there, they hold a gun to their heads. they make the son sleep with his mother, if it is a daughter and father, they do the same thing." The government is forcing citizens to sleep with the opposite genders.

Haiti in the 90’s demonstrated elements of a dystopian society through governmental control and survival because the government is exerting their will on the there citizens causing them to run and hide for there survival. One example of this is from the “children at sea” where the parents of the female protagonist are having an argument, “manman tells papa, you cannot let them kill somebody just because you are afraid. papa says, oh yes, you can let them kill somebody because you are afraid. they are the law. it is their right. we are just being good citizens, following the law of the land. it has happened before all over this country and tonight it will happen again and there is nothing we can do”. This perfectly demonstrates the elements of dystopia previously stated as the characters are stating the exact example of the element of governmental control as there discussing running away to survive

Haiti demonstrated elements of a dystopian society in the 1990s because there had been examples of survival where people had to do everything they on hanging onto their lives. In the story children of the sea there is a moment of understanding where the character is remembering the captain saying "they might have to do something with some of the people"( "children of the sea" page 7) For the character this is a moment of understanding that this is the moment of survival sitting on the sinking ship he is prepared to do anything to get out of there. This is an obvious example of dystopia because this is a survival based situation, the remaining will be the ones to survive.

The depressing and hopeless mood in Children of the sea helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society because it shows us how life was in the 90s. When the male character is describing the people on the boat he mentions being grateful kids aren't aboard because it would pain him "looking into their empty faces to remind me of the hopelessness of the future in our country. It's hard enough with the adults. It's hard enough with me." The word choices like "empty" and "hopelessness" convey a depressing mood because many people didn't have hope for their country.

MOOD contributes to our understanding of a dystopian society because it is the main contribution to the delivery of a story. In "Children of the Seas", it is mentioned multiple times through text only about how disturbing and broken this story is. We see this is she describes the other people on the both as, "thirty-six other deserting souls on this little boat with me". The way she describes them as hopeless and not even giving of chance in the start.

The tense mood in “Children of the Sea” by Edwidge Danticat helps the reader understand life in this dystopian society because of the the situations that the mood provoked out of the characters, for example “when madan roger went to the morgue, they gave her the head. by the time we saw her, she had been carrying the head all over port-au-prince. just to show what's been done to her son” which then can go to a speratic change like how the female protagonist ends the page with “i wish there was some way i could be sure that you really went away. yes, i will. i will keep writing like we promised to do. i hate it, but i will keep writing. you keep writing too, okay! and when we see each other again, it will seem like we lost no time.” This allows us to see that for the character now stuff like this is normal to them which is a very clear separation from the real world as most people would not act like this in the situation that they have just went through.

The mood of the short story "Children of the Sea" was set up as very hopeless. This helps the reader to understand that these characters were living a sad life. "She threw it overboard. I watched her face knot up like a thread, and then she let go. It fell in a splash, floated for a while, and then sank. And quickly after that she jumped in too. And just as the baby's head sank, so did hers." This makes the reader see the pain that this character went through in her life to the point of killing her own child.

Haiti in the 90s demonstrated elements of a dystopian society because there was environmental destruction which means large areas had been destroyed and caused most Haitians to flee the country. Haiti is a very poor country and their people had lost their homes and any resources they had. This created another dystopian element of survival because now they lost everything and "Gangs have since risen in power, leading many Haitians to live in fear for their lives and families."(In Haiti: Refugee crisis in the 90s). This demonstrates an element of a dystopia because Haitians had no choice but to survive and protect themselves from the violence that had started to rise.

The mood helps us understand when the daughter saids, "i shouted that i wasn't a 🤬. he had no business calling me that. he pushed me against the wall for disrespecting him. he spat in my face. i wish those macoutes would kill him. i wish he would catch a bullet so we could see how scared" You can envison the verbal abuse the daughter was receiving from the father. These details contribute to the tense mood due to the word choice such as "Tied up" and "r*aping" showcasing the horrible lives these people have been going through. In a dystopian society the government usually gets away with things like this due to government control and the reader can now understand that through the mood.

The dark tone of "Lolita in Tehran" contributes to our understanding of dystopian society because they how the author feels about them. For example, the text, states "The committee issued a lengthy report in which it condemned the showing of Billy Budd, because, it claimed, the story promoted homosexuality. " This furthers our understanding through government control because The media they consumed was limited to what the government liked. Another example from the text is "We lived in a culture that denied any merit to literary works, considering them important only when they were handmaidens to something seemingly more urgent--namely ideology." This furthers our understanding through government control because the information people consumed was limited to what the government liked. -Gary

When the narrator describes her mothers life, "My mother was very scared. She died her hair, and wore dark glasses for a long time". When Marjane was younger she attend a bilingual school. However, the government began to close all the bilingual schools in the area. While speaking about the sudden shut down of schools, an authority figure shared "they are symbols of capitalism." (Persepolis) The government used their power to close down bilingual schools because it didn't match with their ideals. Even if the citizens didn't agree they had no choice but to obey. It limited the freedom they had when making decisions for themselves and their families.

Tone contributes to our understanding of a dystopian society because it helps the reader understand how the characters feel based on the word choices they use or how they say a certain thing. This will help us determine if the characters are happy or miserable. In a dystopia, the characters are most of the time unhappy and the tone can help us determine how they feel. "Not wearing a beard, shaking hands with members of the opposite sex, clapping or whistling in public meetings, were likewise considered Western and therefore decadent, part of the plot by imperialists to bring down our culture." The character is talking in a negative tone. The quote also demonstrates Government control where stuff has to be done correctly in the Governments eyes.

The tone in "Vietnam: Nothing ever dies" helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society because "When it comes to space, either name effaces how more than just Vietnamese or Americans fought this war, and how it was fought both inside and outside of Vietnam." It shows how people were back then and it shows the way that things have happened at that time. This contributes to our understanding of a dystopian society because it shows how not all people were treated equally and it also shows that people had more power over others.

He comments, "The real American War was this entire American Century, a long and uneven expansion marked by a few periodic high-intensity conflicts" (line 38) The word choice "the real American War was this entire American Century" drastically expresses that the Americans have only caused conflicts throughout its existence as a nation. "in the case of the Vietnam War, Americans invented the name, an odd handcuffing of two nouns that has become normal through constant repetition. So normal, in fact, that even if the name is abbreviated to Vietnam, as it so often is, many people still understand it to mean the war. In response, many have protested that Vietnam is a country, not a war. But long before this cry, some of the Vietnamese (the ones who eventually won) had already begun calling it the American War'. This shows the element of dystopia as although the americans lost they have controlled the situation to make it seem like it was there valiant fight that they just happened to lose.

Mood and tone contributes to the understanding of dystopian society because it helps us other stand the author feelings towards a topic. In the story Vietnam Nothing ever dies the tone is frustration and the mood is tragic. The author is frustrated because Vietnam has been negative affected after the war and they want that to change because in everyone else eyes they are portrayed as the bad guys. "Hence, World War II is the “Good War” for many Americans, while the tragedy in Vietnam is the bad war, a syndrome, a quagmire, a stinging loss in need of healing and recuperation." The Author is telling us that Vietnam is the victim and they shouldn't be getting judged and hated.

The sarcastic, bitter, frustrating tone in "Vietnam: Nothing Ever Dies" helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society by showing the spy's view on the society. The spy disagree with the way things worked and was sarcastic about it saying "World War II is the “Good War” for many Americans, while the tragedy in Vietnam is the bad war, a syndrome, a quagmire"(line 3-4). This gives me a bitter tone because its like the author has a disagreeable taste in what many Americans would say about world war 2 .When the spy says "Good War" it also gave a sarcastic tone saying that it wasn't really good like Americans would say. Then when the spy said "The Philippine-American War implies symmetry between two nations, yet it was Americans who seized the Philippines and instigated the carnage."(line 12-13). This gives me a bitter, frustrated tone because the author says "yet it was..." and this is almost like a rebuttal saying that something is one way but its not really that way. To add on I feel like this continues multiple times in the text to really display how bittersweet this dystopian society is by saying "These ambivalent meanings of the American War are matched by those found in the Vietnam War. While that name has come to represent American defeat and humiliation, there are also elements of American victory and denial, for the name limits the war’s scale in space and time."(line 28-30). I feel like the author is giving off a strong harsh disagreeable taste in how America call this war the Vietnam war. They also say that America is in denial of their lost and make it look like a victory and the author seems to disagree with this as well. The author is giving a very frustrated tone and they seem to not like the topic of the Vietnam war and America's history with the Vietnam war. Overall The author displays a sarcastic, bitter, frustrating tone in "Vietnam: Nothing Ever Dies" helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society by showing the spy's/the authors view on the dystopian society.

The sympathizing mood in The Sympathizer" helps the reader to understand life in the dystopian society because it makes the reader feel pity because of what government control was doing to the people. The Vietnamese government were treating the people bad and "Nor had anyone asked these poor people if they wanted to die of thirst and exposure on the coastal sea, or if they wanted to be robbed and raped by their own soldiers." The phrase "die of thirst" and "robbed and raped" conveys the sympathizing mood because it makes the readers feel bad for what the Vietnamese had to go through with their government in control.-elimar

Latin America and Chile can be considered dystopian societies based on Salvador Allende's "Farewell" Speech, and the videos because both showed huge government control. In Salvador Allende's "Farewell" Speech, and the short videos, it showed that you can be taken for even the slightest of reasons and in the story "And of Clay are we created", the government did nothing to really help Azuchena's situation.

When the text brings the idea "in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines,"(line 29-30 Salvador Allende's "Farewell Speech). This demonstrates that people had been destroying everything in the surrounding area because they are trying to cut the people inside off from the rest of the world and to gain power over them.
Latin America and Chile in particular, demonstrated elements of a dystopian society because the authors open tone helps show the reader/make the reader realize that the terrorism and the attacks going on are very serious which is showing elements of dystopian society because in the text it states "in our country fascism has been already present for many hours — in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to act. " this is showing elements of a dystopian society because a dystopian society consist of characters who battle environmental ruin, technological control, and government oppression. the authors challenges the readers to think differently about current social and political climates, and in some instances can even inspire action, which is what is going on in this quote.

The hopeful tone & sympathetic mood in Salvador Allende's "Farewell Speech" helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society by/because it shows that Salvador had hope to that things would get better but also understood it was the end of his time. "Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed..."(Line 1-2). This created a sympathetic mood that helped understand the dystopian situation Salvador Allende's was in were it seems like everything around him is falling apart and he can only accept him end. It also gives me a sympathetic mood because he knows he will die very soon and was anticipating death. This also gives me gloomy tone because there is a sense of melancholy in these words "The last opportunity to address you." It's like saying this is the end for me and these are my final words before my death. overall the start of the "Farewell Speech" is giving negative sad mood and tone. "...I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seeds which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever."(line 10-12) This lets me feel like he was hopeful that the people of his country will continue and grow I get this from "I am certain that the seeds witch we have planted...". This adds a understanding to the dystopian society because it shows that even when there is somewhat a element of survival he still has hope in his people.

The frustrated tone of Salvador Allende's "Farewell Speech" contributes to our understanding of the dystopian element of survival. For example in his speech he states "The people must defend themselves...must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets."(Line 35-36). Salvador uses words such as "destroyed" and "defend" to express his frustration towards the airforce because they have abandoned their duty of protecting the people. This connects back to the dystopian element of survival because Salvador wanted to protect his people from the worst to come(the dirty war) since there would be no one else to fend for them.

Tone contributes to our understanding of the dystopian society because it helps understand that this is a goodbye speech and that the tone is a hopeless . "My words do not have bitterness but disappointment." He talks about how she is disappointed in the military and the government. The dystopian element being conveyed is is survival because the people can relay on no one else because their President is about to be killed."The people must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated either." The President was there last hope. This is why the tone is hopeless. Prince

The desperate tone of this speech helps the reader to understand life in this dystopian society because ¨this will be the last opportunity for me to address you..the Air Force has bombed the antennas¨. The tone helps the reader understand the life in a dystopian society because phrases like ¨last opportunity" and ¨bombed the antennas¨ help convey that the author is almost crying for help due to the bad conditions he is currently going through. This also demonstrates the dystopian element of survival because the president is trying to raise the hopes of all the citizens because he knows that they are living under deficient standards during this war.

Latin America and Chile in particular, demonstrated elements of a dystopian society because of the sense of survival and the tone of hostility that is presented. This is seen in "And of Clay are we created" where Azucena was on the brink of dying and we see the tone switch drastically, to the where Rolf Carle, "prayed in silence that she would die quickly". The fact that all they could rely on was survival shows that they didn't have much to depend on the first place.

May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers ¨ this show his disappointed and how the people his trust stand him in the back and how he went his people to know that they would get back up for this and everything would be all right ¨ I am not going to resign!

Latin America and Chile in particular, demonstrated elements of dystopian society because the element of government control is shown in the video, Uncovering Pinochet's Secret Death Camps, where secret government facilities were exposed. In these facilities people were torture and killed. The secret government used their power to torture and kill people who were suspected of being against the government. This helped them control the public and prevent opposition. When the secret government came to get someone people would hide and act like they saw nothing. People were filled with fear because of the secret government.

The direct tone in Salvador Allende "Farewell Speech" helps the reader understand life in this dystopian society because it allows us to see what its like as its just beginning, we see this as Salvador Allende (the last thing that held the normal society) was speaking as if he was going to be gone after this speech. This is proven further when he says "I address the man of Chile, the worker, the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been already present for many hours — in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to act. They were committed. History will judge them". This contributes to his direct tone as hes being blunt to what gonna happen to this country and hes making sure that hes separating reality from his hopes. This contributes to our understanding of dystopian societies because it allows to see an outside perspective to before something happened.

The direct tone in "President Allende's speech" helps the reader understand life in the dystopian element of survival. In his speech he explains how he is "certain that my sacrifice will not be in vain, I am certain that, at the very least, it will be a moral lesson that will punish felony, cowardice, and treason." By using words such as "sacrifice" and "vain" Allende is expressing how him sacrificing himself might help prepare the people for what is coming. This connects by the dystopian element of survival Allende knows that once the invasion comes everyone will be left to defend themselves. So he is warning everybody for what is coming.
