I am a disabled PhD student and I have had to fight for my entire life, throughout my education and my journey towards a career as a researcher, for accommodations and reasonable adjustments. I have watched many of my disabled friends and colleagues drop out of education, leave academia, or become unemployed because employers and universities refuse to make adjustments such as e.g. working from home. Now during the pandemic these adjustments have been made for abled people with the possibility that practices like working from home or studying remotely will continue because employers and education providers see the benefits of them. Disability futures have been held back for so long by bigoted attitudes such as these, which are perpetuated by the ableism shown by UK society and politicians, and I am furious. How can allies encourage employers and education providers to to do better and make adjustments (e.g. universal design)?
