Les cordes de les muscleres no arriben al fons del mar perquè la llum del sol no arriba a més de tres metres i el plàncton ha de viure amb la llum del sol. Si els musclos no es poden alimentar, moren.
Aproximadament hi han unes 100 muscleres a la Badia dels Alfacs i 100 més a la Badia del Fangar.
