They are all autotrophs, they have chloroplasts with chlorophyll and they also use sunlight for creating their own food. 
Most of them reproduce asexually using spores but others reproduce sexually using gametes. 
Most of them live in water but others live on rocks, plants, animals or the ground. 
They help humans and the environment producing substances such as agar that humans use in their food. Agar is a substance derives by rhodophyta (red algae). Algae also help the environment producing oxygen, 30%-50% of the oxygen on our planet is produced by algae.

There are six different types of algae according to their colour. 
UNICELLULAR
- Chrysophyta: golden-brown colour. 
- Xantophyta: yellow-green colour.
- Pyrrophyta: they look like fire algae.
MULTICELLULAR
-Rhodophyta: produces agar and has a red colour.
- Paeophyta: brown colour.
-Chlorophyta: green colour
