Peace at last, a picture book which encourages reading aloud with predictable phrases via the use of repetition. The book focuses on the use of onomatopoeia to relate to noises which allow children to reflect on their own experiences.

Peace at last is a KS1 focused book targeted towards Year 1 (age 5/6) The book is targeted towards this age group due to the book encouraging reading aloud while also encouraging children to relate to their own experiences with noises within their household. These are both encouraged within the national curriculum at Year 1 which is essential in improving reading comprehension and developing a pleasure for reading.

This will be a whole class read as the book is engaging and allows for whole class engagement and reading aloud due to the repetition and predictable phrases and breaks to allow for personal reflection on their own experiences. As the book allows for children to develop understanding for the book rather quickly it allows for children to predict what might happen as they read further into the book which will show a clear understanding as to what they are reading.

Task 1 – Ask the children what other noises they can think of which can be used as a onomatopoeia and to spell it correctly.

Task 2 – Ask the children how they would feel if they couldn’t get to sleep and how Mr Bear could have been feeling?

Task 3 – Reflect on the cover prior to teaching and ask what the children expect the book to be about.

Turn the radio up is a modern poem written by Joseph Coehlo, it focuses on the use of a technique called crescendo where you start soft and finish loud. The plot is about how a kid slowly builds up using her radio and the noises they can hear and the use of personification is used heavily which helps children relate to the words being used.

I would suggest using this book within KS2 and it would be a whole class approach as it is a good way to explain the use of techniques and methods of reading a poem and can be analysed to see the writing styles used ie: personification.

Task 1: Question the children what is occuring as the poem progresses

Task 2: Ask the children to write a verse and use their own personification skills
