Teachers can create classes and assign specific videos and practices, but students can also explore on their own. There are incentives and rewards for students to earn by working on Khan Academy. Khan Academy has added all kinds of subjects to their site, like science, computing, growth mindset, grammar, and more. One great thing about IXL is that it adapts to the student's ability level, and works up from there. It allows students to practice and master skills in reading, math, science and social studies. This program meets students where they are and is easy for teachers to differentiate instruction. Students can earn points for behavior/homework/etc, but I mainly use it for communication with parents. I take pictures and videos of the students' work, presentations, or daily happenings in class. With Class Dojo, it's easy to share all those with the child's parent and send reminders/updates for class easily.
