This journal supports balanced literacy. It recognizes the affects of the bottom-up approach by reiterating the importance of phonics instruction. It points out how Gough's model begins with visual representations of letters and sounds, and as students learn them they can then sequentially apply them to decoding words and later comprehension. It also points out how Samuels and Laberge recognize that the brain can only process small bits of information at a time in order to longevity remembrance.

Starfall is a wonderful technology resource for students from pre-K to fourth grade. Starfall gives students access to over 900 meaningful lessons including expanded reading content. The site presents the material in a fun and engaging way so that the student thinks they are just having fun. Students can explore the content at their own pace, starting with letter sounds and gradually advancing to more reading to learn strategies, reading things such as Chinese fables. It is valuable to use in a Bottom-Up approach classroom because it starts from the bottom with letter sounds and builds on the students skills as they master skills.

Orton Gillingham's 3 part drill is an excellent tool to implement, once trained, into teaching students phonics. It begins with visual flashcards of phonemes. Next is the kinesthetic practice of drawing the phonemes in sand or another tactile medium based on the sound given. Then there is the blending portion of the drill. This is done to build fluency. This video offers tips to implementing the drill virtually.

The results were eye opening. This article goes into detail about which hemispheres students use when reading and especially dyslexic readers. This study took students who did not respond well with phonics based teaching and used strategies such as tracking, phrase-cued reading, repeated reading, slower paced reading and timed reading. Books chosen were based on the students interests. The article states that "In whole language children use print, grammar, and meaning to understand text. The main focus on whole language is meaning."

This is a phrase-cued text generator. Teachers can plug in a passage they want students to read and this will generate the passage with key phrases cued together. Phrase-Cued texts are a means to train students to recognize natural pauses that occur between phrases in reading. Because phrases are usually key ideas the students ability to identify them can enhance comprehension. This is a great tool to use when using the whole language approach to reading.
