Question- Which fruits would be suitable for extracting DNA?

Hypothesis

I hypothesize that strawberries that contain a lot of water would be suitable when extracting DNA because the liquid from the fruit would be mixed well with the DNA extracting liquid.

Materials

-2 strawberries

-2 limes

-2 grapes

-3 resealable plastic bags

-2 teaspoons of dish washing detergent.

-1/2 cups of water

-1 coffee filter

-1/2 cups of rubbing alcohol.

Question

How would the yeast and sugar affect the balloon?

Hypothesis

My hypothesis is the yeast and the sugar would affect the balloon by expanding a lot.

Meterials :

✎ 1 package of dry yeast

✎ warm water

✎ 1 tablespoon of water

✎ a 1-liter plastic bottle

✎ large measuring cup

✎ 1 large balloon

✎ small mixing bowl

Procedure

1. Combine the sugar and dry yeast in the mixing bowl.

2. Measure 1 cup of warm water using the measuring cup.

3. Add the yeast/sugar mixture to the measuring cup and stir until the mixture is dissolved.

4. Pour the contents of the measuring cup into the plastic bottle.

5. Place the mouth of the balloon over the neck of the bottle

6. Place the bottle in a warm, dark place.

7. Observe the bottle every 15 minutes for the next few hours to look for changes in the size of the balloon.

8. Check the balloon the next day and observe any changes.

Analysis

I observed that the balloon was expanding straightly. The balloon becomes bigger and have some bubbles because the yeast eats the sugar then make a carbon dioxide.

Conclusion

I hypothesized that yeast and the sugar would affect the balloon by expanding a lot. My hypothesis was correct but there was a unusual thing happen it was the balloon was expanding straight and puffy.

1. Get a plastic bottle

2. Poor yeast/ sugar mixture with vinegar in the plastic bottle

3. Cover the top of the plastic bottle with big balloon

4. Then, place the bottle in a warm dark place

5. See how the balloon size had changed in hours, Observe

6. Check the balloon the next day and observe

• What affect could salt cause when we put salt in the ice?

Hypothesis

• I hypothesize that the salt will make the ice colder.

• Broken ice x 25

• Timer x 1

Procedure

1. Pour some water in the cup.

2. Pour some broken ice in the beaker.

3. Put 1/2 water in the jar.

4. Get the straw out and put 5 drops of water in the test tube.

5. Put the test tube and thermometer in each of the ice

   cup.

6. Set the timer for 3-5 minutes and observe what happened to the water.

7. Put some salt in the ice and wait for 10 minutes with the timer again.

8. Repeat 3 time.

9. Compare how much does salt amount changes the water.

(e.x. vinegar and baking soda)

In future, I could put more yeast and more sugar because i think it will get to make a lot of bubble and make the balloon expand.

The inside of the bottle became a bit soggy.

_{I noticed that the bubbles was getting bigger as the balloon. I found out that when we put more sugar in it, the balloon will get bigger.}

I tnink the bottle was too big to make ballon big.

The salt made the water colder because the salt lower the water's freezing point.

I think that bottle was too big to balloon get big.

ROCKS: Rock water was pretty yellow. A lot of dirt got washed away but the water did not become clean like the others. However, the water came out quickly and we did no have to wait that long.

LEAVES: The leaves didn't purify water well. There were a lot of dirt coming out and it had really yellow water. Almost similar with the dirty water. I think it is because we ripped the leaves and it became not dense.

TREE BARK: When I poured the water, some parts of the tree bark floated up. I wondered why the tree bark floated but not the leaves that were lighter than the bark. The water looked orange

FLOWER PETAL: I thought that flower petals won't be a good purifyer because it looked similar to leaves and leaves did not work well. However, the flower petals turned out to be better than the leaves but not as good as sand. The water seemed yellow. ( there were a little but of dirt there)
