These themes are important to the novel because they are all included heavily in the novel and they describe the type of way how everything was during the 1930s-1960s time period and how things were getting better throughout the novel and worse throughout the novel.

There are a lot of racial moments throughout the novle such as during the graduation when the Negro kids had sung the Negro National Anthem because the whites had said something disrespectful about the blacks being able to just be really good "athletes" and not get as many opportunities or jobs as the whites.

Notice how the tone is different in the novel and how it is uncomforting, devastating, emotional to happypassionate, hopeful and faithful, etc. The tone shifts at different parts of the novel which shows how the author(Maya Angelou) had felt during these horrible experiences in the novel.

The opening scene in the church foreshadows the struggles Maya will have to overcome in life. When she cannot recite the poem and flees the church while crying and peeing, Angelou notes her fear of the people laughing at her and her sense of inferiority and dispalcemnet even among other blacks. She also leaves the church laughing which also foreshadows her ultimate success.
