What makes video games great? by Cathy Edgar

Watch the two videos and read two out of three of the articles for this week. As you watch and read, take notes and create 2 lists: 1. What makes a great game? List qualities of fun, addictive games. **Post sticky notes on this padlet to answer this question. 2. Think about your favorite video games. What qualities make them great? ** Post notes on the other padlet, linked in week 2. Put one thought on each sticky note. This wall will get very large!

They have the perfect balance between simplicity & frustration. Personally, I love the feeling of thinking you will NEVER make it past this level, and then the pure joy when you do.

~Tom Chatfield

People should be credited for everything they try and do. Don’t punish failure. Instead, reward and reinforce, and make everything count towards a clear measure of progress. As I’ve said elsewhere, one of the most profound transformations we can learn from games is how to turn the sense that someone has “failed” into the sense that they “haven’t succeeded yet.”
This is absolutely central to all forms of learning and engagement. With many of the most intractable problems in the world today, like global warming and pollution, it can be almost impossible to learn or understand something when consequences and feedback are distant from causes. Showing a clear link between things, and allowing people to experience this experimentally, allows learning to take place: you need to be shown and to experience exactly how an action plays out, what it caused, whether your attempt worked or not.

This is the real neurological gold mine so far as gaming is concerned. Dopamine elevates when you get a little prize for doing something, but what really lights up the brain is the unexpected reward: the one that couldn’t be predicted. And so the right amount of well-calibrated uncertainty can create intense engagement in all manner of tasks.

When I'm playing any type of game. I like when there is frequent feedback with the game because if there isn't it gets really boring fast.

the story can engage the player and make them want to continue to see what happens next. There are some games where you just choose how the story goes and you go through actions to change it to how you would react. This makes the player feel in control and keeps them interested

for example in The walking dead video game it is mostly story based and the art style is realistic. you choose the actions for your character and as a result it changes your story accordingly and you get a different ending.
