How many references should I use in my assignment?

I would suggest not focusing on the number as there is no hard and fast rule-rather think about what job your references are doing. They are being used by you to support or counter the statements and arguments you make in your discussion. Providing all of them are doing this job, it doesn't matter how many there are. Just make sure that they are doing this job- an easy way to check this is to highlight all your citations, then check that each has been discussed. Look for a balanced mix of statements, evidence (e.g. references) and analysis.

How do I insert footnotes into my Word document?

Click on the 'references' tab within Word. Then choose 'insert footnote'. This ensures that your footnotes always appear in the right place, and if you remove some the numbering is always consistent.

When discussing a specific section in an AoP, if I have wrote the full Act name and date in the work and added a footnote, would the footnote just be the section, or would I still need to put the act name again and then the section?

A citation in a footnote is not required when citing legislation if all the information the reader needs about the source is provided in the text. However, where the text does not include the name of the Act or the relevant section, this information should be provided in a footnote. I would advise the footnote should include the full name of the Act and the section.

If you are referring to the same legislation (or other sources) multiple times there are ways of using a short form, see page 5 " Subsequent citations" in the full OSCOLA guide.
https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/sites/files/oxlaw/oscola_4th_edn_hart_2012.pdf

When writing the bibliography, do we include both primary and secondary sources, or just secondary sources?

First, just to clarify what we mean by "bibliography" and how this differs from a reference list. A reference list is the detailed list of references that are cited in your work. A bibliography usually refers to a detailed list of references cited in your work, plus the background readings or other material that you may have read, but not actually cited. However, the 2 terms are often used interchangeably. I know students are usually only asked to include those items that appear in their foot notes, but you may wish to double check this with your tutor.

Primary sources (cases and legislation) should be listed first (under the heading Table of Cases and Table of Legislation). Secondary sources (books, journals, etc.) should be listed (under the heading Bibliography) immediately after the primary sources.

Each source only needs to be listed once, even if you have referred to it multiple times in your work. The bibliography should list the sources in alphabetical order. I attach an example bibliography for you.

If you are using one quote spanning 2 pages, just pinpoint the starting page. If using ideas from a range of pages you can separate these with a dash, or if you want to cite several different pages, separate these with a comma. e.g.

K Zweigert and H Kötz, An Introduction to Comparative Law (Tony Weir tr, 3rd edn, OUP 1998) 28-29.

K Zweigert and H Kötz, An Introduction to Comparative Law (Tony Weir tr, 3rd edn, OUP 1998) 28, 31, 33.

You only need to add pinpoints if quoting or referring to specific content. If referring to the whole work in general, no pages are required.
