I think the theme is the power of motherhood. Motherhood teaches a new kind of love that some never thought possible. Throughout the novel Taylor learns what being a mother really means. In the beginning she fears the idea of becoming a mother, and she views the concept as a burden on someone, instead of a benefit. Later when she gets "stuck" with Turtle she is clueless as to what to do. She knows the right thing is not abandoning the child again. As she is taking care of the child, she learns to love her and accept Turtle for who she is. Taylor's love becomes fierce and she will defend Turtle at all costs. Motherhood changes the way people view the world. Taylor never really cared about the world or what wrong doings were in it. After she gets Turtle she becomes more aware of all the horrible things in the world. Motherhood inspires people to achieve things they never thought possible, and to believe that love can conquer all. It teaches that love can be found almost anyway.

To me the strongest them in The Bean Trees is how the support of community to get through difficult times.
~ Mattie is a main support for Taylor and Turtle. When they first get to Tuscon Mattie takes them in and explains to Taylor some of the key things to be a mother.
~Louann lets Taylor and Turtle live with her and Dwayne Ray. Louann helps Taylor look after Turtle and she even figures out Turtle's name is April. She opens Taylor and Turtle up in ways they both never thought was possible.
~Edna Poppy babysits Turtle whenever Taylor needs her to. She protects Turtle when they are attacked even though she can't see them.
It takes a community to help raise a child and the bean trees shows this beautifully.

I believe one of the most important themes of bean trees is facing fears. From facing their fears Taylor,Estevan and Esperanza were able to drive cross country risking deportation to legally adopt turtle

I think one of the major themes in the novel the bean trees is the personal growth that people can achieve over time. Taylor-she never wanted to be a mother. She ran away from it, leaving her home where getting pregnant seemed to be the norm. Yet along the way she was burdened with a child. In the beginning Taylor didn't know what to do with a child, but she quickly adapted to being a fitting guardian. As their journey continued Taylor fell more and more in love with turtle, wanting their journey to last forever. So Taylor did whatever she could to make sure that would happen, and she became her legal mother. Taylor's journey went from avoiding having a child to wanting nothing more than the child she was given.
Turtle- Turtle experienced a lot of personal growth throughout the book. At first she is quiet and shaken from the experience she had in her old home. However, as she became more familiar with Taylor she felt more comfortable and safe. Eventually Turtle started talking, this is something Taylor thought might never happen based on her past. Now that turtle had someone there for her, she was able to grow literally and figuratively, and push past the obstacles that bound her from happiness.
Esperanza- Esperanza was very depressed throughout the book and only ever started to be happier when she was around Turtle. This was because she reminded her of her daughter that got taken away from her. On their trip to Oklahoma Taylor saw they were getting close and Esperanza seemed happier than ever. Soon Taylor thought of a plan to legally adopt Turtle and needed Esperanza and Esteven to pretend to be her real parents. This gave Esperanza a chance to get over Ismene by using Turtle as a means of closure.
These are all examples of how people can grow over time and by having new people come into their lives. It is important for people to undergo personal growth so that they can learn more about themselves and discover new things that make them happier.

The theme that stood out prominently in the novel The Bean Trees was the power that women poses when they work as a team. Lou Ann, Taylor and Mattie each offer very important aspects to their trio. Mattie is able to offer a job to Taylor in her tire shop and provide support to Turtle. In exghange Taylor helps Mattie around the shop and provide company and female companionship to her. Taylor is important to Lou Ann because she assists her in getting past the abusive relationship she had with her ex-husband by showing her that she is capable of being independent. Lou Ann helps Taylor by supporting and taking care of Turtle while Taylor is working. All of these examples of this support show how women are capable of supporting themselves and their family with help from one another. This novel is a beautiful depiction of women working together towards becomingstrong and independent.
