"There was too much health in him", this tells that he was a very active man who liked to work a lot. His expectations of America were that this was a wealthy country where he and his family would succeed and have more opportunities to have a better life economically. "Tomorrow I will get a job and perhaps Jonas is going to get one too; and then we can get a place of our own" This tells that they thought that it was easy to start a life here. Packingtown is a place where only the fittest survive the poberty and there is only a way out of there that is by breaking the law and not playing by the rules.
