The Soviet Union hosted and 65 nations refused to go to the summer olympics. There was way less competition and the reason they boycotted was because the hosts of the Olympics just invaded Afghanistan.

Soviets were strong believers in the “triangle” theory where the more people they trained and had participate in sports, the large base of the pyramid, they would be able to produce more top level athletes to succeed in international competitions.

The medal race was a huge competition between the Soviet and US. For a while the Soviet had a huge dominance for the medal race. Then the end of the Cold War US started to pull away.
