Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

Trust Vs. Mistrust is the very first stage of Erikson's development. This stage lasts from birth to 18 months. This stage is important because depending on how the child is treated they will either gain trust or mistrust in people. This will also affect them in the near future depending on how they were treated as babies. For example, I gained lots of trust from my parents and grandparents when I was little they took great care of me. They fed me when I was hungry, gave me attention when I wanted it, and kept me by their side. They never abandoned me. This positively affected me in the future because I was not afraid to trust others because of how I was treated by them. For example, as mentioned in the text "A child who first successfully developed a sense of trust would be in a particularly good position to develop this strength."

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt is the second stage of Erikson's development. This stage develops at age 18 months through 3 years old. This stage is when a child gains independence and personal control over themselves. How my parents allowed me to gain control and independence over myself by allowing me to pick my outfits even if the outfit looked silly. They potty-trained me so I could use the bathroom by myself. Lastly, they allowed me to express my feelings without judgment. This helped me gain confidence in myself when I grew older. Also, the textbook charts mention that a "child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt." Since I have gone through this phase I've learned to become more independent.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

Initiative vs. Guilt is the third stage of Erickson's development. This stage develops at around the age of three to six years old. This stage is when children use their power and their control over the world. They use this by interacting and exploring with others. For example, when I was around this age I love to socialize and do fun activities with others my age. However, I had a negative experience during this stage. No one really liked me like that. I was bullied by others for no reason. This led to me becoming insecure in myself and made me not speak my thoughts or be around others a lot. Now I don't have plenty of friends because of how I was treated by the world. In the text, it mentions that "if you feel ashamed after doing something others think is bad that might stop you from doing it again."

Industry vs. Inferiority is the fourth stage of Erikson's development. This stage occurs around six through 11 years old. This stage is when a child learns different things and skills. They will feel useful if they are supported by others but if not they will have a sense of worthlessness. For example, with me, I was supported by my father when learning new skills. He would always support me when I did learn new things. I succeeded in things that I learned successful because of the support. This helped me build my self-worth, self-efficacy, and build confidence. "In the text, it mentions that "As children experience success in areas of functioning, they also begin to develop a sense of self- efficacy or confidence."

Identity vs. Role Confusion is the 5th stage of Erikson's development. This stage occurs at around 12 through 18 years old. This stage is when they begin to question who they are. They also began to explore independence and gain more awareness of themself. For example, at the age of 13, I began to question who I was. I explored different things and styles. I tried to find where I fit in society. Now since I'm older I found out who I am and where I fit in society. In the text, it mentions that "self-concept describes what we feel about ourselves and guides our actions."

Intimacy vs. Isolation is the 6 stage of Erikson's development. This stage occurs in young adulthood. This stage of forming a romantic connection with others. However, if struggling to find love then this could lead to loneliness. I am currently going through this stage. I have not found a successful relationship, leading me to become lonely and isolate myself from others. I know one day I will but during this time love is not my main focus. The text mentions that "a person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption."

Generativity vs. Stagnation is the 7th stage of Erikson's development. This development occurs during the middle of adulthood. This stage is when adults feel the need to help the ones in need. Also, do things that will benefit others. I have not gone through this stage yet because I am at the stage where I am trying to find to help myself succeed. However, to resolve this stage when I make it there I can tend to help others like children which I want to do one day. I am a caring person in general so I know I would do great in this stage. I love helping. In the text, it mentions that people successfully go through this stage by "helping other generations."

Integrity vs. Despair is the 8th and last stage of Erikson's development. This stage occurs at age 65 until death. This stage is when people start to look back at their lives and feel satisfied or regret about their choices in life. They wonder about all the decisions they have made. I also have not made it to this stage because I'm still young. However, to resolve this stage I can just accept what has gone on in my life and accept things rather than think back upon it a want to relive it again which would not happen anyway. In the text it mentions to successfully go through this stage they would "accept of own life and death." However if not then "despairs over inability to relive life."
