As LSTs, one of you will be allocated to be the CHODU doctor each day (Mon-Fri). You will carry bleep 3797 and be responsible for reviewing unplanned admissions, e.g. patients with febrile neutropenia, sickle crisis, mucositis. You will work alongside the triaging OWLS nurse and CHODU nurse in charge.

You will also be responsible for chasing up jobs from discharged patients from both ward and CHODU and ensuring bloods and investigations sent in CHODU are chased and 'actioned' on ICE.

Covering this pager is a great opportunity to learn skills such as portacath access, and to sit in some extra outpatient clinics which run alongside the day unit and learn about outpatient care. You will also need to liaise with the ward team about any admissions.

Once you have seen patients you will be able to discuss with the HSTs or Lee & Jo, who are our CHODU doctors. Don't forget to escalate to the consultant on-call any concerns.

SACHA is a prospective, multicentre, international observational study designed to document the experience of patients (≤ 25 years old) with paediatric malignancies, non-enrolled in clinical trials, treated with innovative therapies (targeted therapies, immunotherapy or chemotherapy) either as compassionate use of experimental drugs or off-label use of anti-cancer medicines.

During your placement you will be working with our haematology consultants, Dr Mike Richards, Dr Beki James & Dr Jacob Grinfeld providing haematology care and advise for children and young people <18 years across Yorkshire & Humber region.

We also have 3 haemato-oncology consultants, Drs Chris Lethaby, Danielle Ingham and Hemalatha Doss who work within the leukaemia service. Dr Doss also works within SCT.

There will be lots of support from the on-call Paediatric Oncologist and also from the Paediatric Haematology trainees, SCT fellow and also the paediatric HSTs and LSTs.

The Induction information on this Padlet will be helpful to read as you start your placement. You will also receive induction in the laboratory and in procedure lists. Dr Grinfeld will also inform you who your clinical supervisor is for your placement.

The Value of Follow-Up Scans for Children with Brain Tumours: Medulloblastoma and Ependymoma

The SCAN-ME project will investigate whether follow-up scans are worthwhile, by looking at the experiences of families, the benefits and risks of scans and the extra costs of providing scans to the NHS. 

All we have to do is give out PIS and complete a 'consent to contact' form, then forward onto the Researcher, (Lucy Beresford, from York Uni). The research itself is all carried out by Lucy, over the phone if participants prefer.  Patients get £20 voucher for taking part.

If in doubt speak to the on-call consultant or microbiologist. Narrowing antibiotics can help prevent Clostridium difficile infections.

We are talking to patients who smoke, have recently stopped smoking, or who vape about their views and experiences of smoking and vaping. We also want to know patients views on how young cancer survivors who smoke and/or vape could be better supported. The study does not assume that you want to quit and will not try to encourage you to do so. We just want to hear your views. You will be offered a £20 Amazon voucher as a thank you for your time.

Eligibility criteria

· diagnosed with cancer or a brain tumour aged 0-24 years;

· currently aged 16-29 years;

· cancer free and at least 12 months from the end of treatment;

· able to speak and understand English;

· are a regular current tobacco smoker (usually defined as smoking at least one cigarette a week), OR stopped smoking tobacco within the last 12 months, AND/OR are a current user of vapes/e-cigarettes (i.e., those who smoke(d) tobacco or vape, or do both, will be eligible).

Exclusion criteria

· ONLY smoke tobacco when mixed with cannabis (and who DO NOT also vape)

· have a cognitive impairment which would significantly impact on their understanding of the study, or their ability to give informed consent;

· are deemed unfit to take part by their consultant/nurse specialist due to issues such as the presence of serious psychological problems which may mean they would find taking part distressing.
