Cherry explains to Ponyboy how the only thing that separates the Socs and Greasers is emotion. “It’s not just money. Part of it is, but not all. You greasers have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re sophisticated-cool to the point of not feeling anything.”(38). Cherry bridged the gap of what Ponyboy thought on who the Socs are.

Motivations

One event in the story was during the fire at the church. Jonny risked his life going in the church to save the kids in there. I think Jonny’s motivation was to have self worth. All throughout his life he hadn’t had anybody that said you did good. If Johnny hadn’t saved the kids he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself and might have committed suicide. Jonny also said in the letter to Pony, “Listen, I don't mind dying now. It's worth it. It's worth saving their kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it.”(178). Jonny said there lives are worth more than mine meaning his motivation was to save the kids so they could have a better life than he did. Jonnys motivation was to die knowing he was worth something to somebody in the world.

Another event was Johnny killing Bob. Johnny killed Bob to save one of his only friends, Pony. Jonny the pet of the gang killed the head of the Socs, Bob. I know Johnny would have never killed Bob out of revenge or fun. Johnny did for two reasons. One, Johnny killed Bob out of self defence. Bob was hurting one of his best friends, Ponyboy, so Johnny had to find a way to help Pony. As it says on page 57, “Yeah.” His voice quavered slightly. “ I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade...they were gonna beat me up….” (57) This represents how Johnny killed out of self defence talking about how they had a knife. Also I think Johnny didn’t want to be beaten up bad again. Johnny learned from his mistakes not letting them have a head start. Lastly I think Johnny killed Bob because he didn’t want something to happen to Pony like it happened to him. Johnny cared so much for Pony he killed for him. That is a good friend.

Character Flaws

Johnny’s flaws throughout the book are many and they hurt him very much. The first is his nervous, pet like attitude. He would always tense up and get very nervous when the Socs or someone he did not trust was around. An example is, “ Johnny made a kind of gasp and his eyes were smoldering.” (55). The second flaw Johnny has is that he lets people control him. It mentions he is the pet of the gang many times. So from this I can infer that he is not going to stick up and tell other people they are wrong a lot, in the fear of getting hurt. I think he get’s this flaw is from the beatings his parents and the Socs give him throughout his childhood. Johnny has flaws, but he uses them for good and bad throughout this book.

Johnny has many desires. One of those such desires is to help people have a better life than he did. One event that showed Johnny’s desires is the fire. The fire showed Johnny’s selfless act. This next quote shows how Johnny felt after the fire. “It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for.”(178). This shows how Johnny risked his life to save some kids because he wanted them to have a better life and they were worth more than him.

Another one of Johnny’s desires is for Ponyboy to, “stay gold”. Johnny states this on page 178 in his letter to Ponyboy. “ That’s gold. Keep that way, it is a good way to be.”(178). Johnny said this means to keep the good things in life when you get older and don’t lose it. This is what Johnny desires most in the whole entire book. For everybody to Stay Gold and keep what they love when Johnny couldn’t.

Personality Test Review

I believe that this personality test relates to Johnny extremely well. First of all, it says that Johnny is 93% introverted and this explains him well because in the book it says, “ If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny's.” (11). From this I can infer that he is kept to himself and doesn't interact with people that well. The next reason this test relates to Johnny is that it says he seeks and values harmony which means that he is not interested in having power and being the leader. This explains Johnny because throughout the whole book it describes him as the, “Gang’s pet…” (12). This is demonstrated because he follows what everyone else says and does. My final reason that this relates to Johnny is the friendships section. It says that he will have few friends, but the few he has will be very close. To us this demonstrates Johnny and the gang. They all seemed to have a special bond together and these were the few Johnny go close to and trusted. Overall we believe that this personality test explained Johnny well and had a correlation with his personality.

Johnny is an onion. He has many layers that people may see and ignore, but when you peel all the layers there is a precious prize inside. These are the friendships and the selflessness that make him who he is he. You have to know how to use an onion to get to like it and in this book the characters that use the union correctly have an unseen relationship with him. An example is the gang, they took him in and made him feel welcome from the start. When Johnny started to feel comfortable, the layers started peeling and Johnny became a part of the gang. “If it hadn’t been for the gang, Johnny would have never known what love and affection are.”(12). Overall Johnny is an onion and he has many layers that are needed to be peeled in order to get the goodness and love.

Darry- ( The Know-it-All). Darry is the Know it all. In this book the protagonist Ponyboy usually says that Darry is never satisfied and thinks he is smarter and better then Ponyboy. It also talks about how Darry was very smart and this supports the reason that he is a know-it-all. Another reason is his comments about Ponyboy not using his head and Darry acting like a know it all because he is telling him what and what not to do. Overall Darry is a know-it-all and he expresses his feelings mostly toward Ponyboy.

This is not all his fault though, we infer that his parents were mean and hurtful to him as a kid.. He has gotten arrested at the age of 10 and he is a bad egg. “ He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids- he did everything.” (11). Since he commits all these crimes he is usually the target when the police say the greasers committed a crime making himself the Scapegoat.

An example is when Ponyboy is getting drowned by the Socs Johnny killed Bob, the leader, to save Pony and force the Socs to leave. He also must make a decision to get the kids out of the burning building first instead of himself. This causes him to get hit by a burning log on the way out of the building. One thing Ponyboy confides is how he doesn’t like Darry and he thinks Darry doesn’t love him. Soda then tells Pony how Darry does love him. Another reason Soda is, “The Confidant” is because Soda confides his deep love for his girlfriend Sandy.

Conflict- (Society vs. Society) There are two conflicts in this story. One conflict is the Greasers versus Socs. This is shown in many events. One of those events is, “The Rumble”. This where the Socs and Greasers war against one another for territory. Another of those events is when the socs attacked Ponyboy and Johnny in the park. This shows the rivalry between them. They fight Pony and Johnny only because they picked up there girls.

The second conflict is Greasers versus Society. Society sees the Greasers as juvenile delinquents as said on page 107. “Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes.”(107).This shows society thinks of them as stupid people that get into trouble all the time. In the book it also describes the socs as a disgrace to society one day and the best people in the world the next. The Greasers don’t get that kind of attention. They only get the negative attention when society is oblivious to what the socs actually do.

Theme- The theme in the Outsiders is love and brotherhood. We believe this because there is 7-10 events that describe this. An important one is the event where the gang sticks together and supports each other even when Dally and Johnny have died. They all are sad and unhappy, but their love for each other always comes through. An example is, “Steve stumbled forward with a sob, but Soda caught him by the shoulders.” (154). Another event is the gang never leaves anyone to get hurt. Every fight or battle they may get into people from the gang always comes and saves the each other. An example is at the beginning of the book when Pony getś jumped and before the Socs can injure him the gang comes and saves him. Overall the Outsiders is a book about is love and brotherhood.
