One of the battles of the war of 1812 were the battle of Lake Erie. On September 10, 1813, American Naval forces under General Oliver Hazard Perry won a major victory over British forces at Lake Erie on Pennsylvania’s coastline. Because the American victory closed off British navigation of Lake Erie, British forces evacuated Detroit. The retreating British and Indian forces were subsequently engaged at the Battle of Tippecanoe along the Thames River in Indiana. General William Henry Harrison and American forces routed the enemy on October 5, 1813.

On November 6, 1811, territorial governor William Henry Harrison and 1,000 riflemen marched to the village of Prophetstown for the purposes of clearing the land for American settlers. The march was timed to coincide with the absence of the great Native warrior, Tecumseh, who was recruiting warriors in the south for his cause. Early that morning, Harrison’s men were ambushed. Despite a brutal battle in the dark morning, Harrison’s men succeeding in causing the Natives to retreat. Two days later, American forces burned Prophetstown to the ground.

On January 8, 1815, British General Edward Pakenham and over 10,000 British soldiers and Native warriors attacked Andrew Jackson and his well fortified army of over 5,000 men at Chalmette, about five miles downriver from New Orleans. The object was to separate Louisiana from the rest of the United States. American soldiers, aided by pirates under the command of Jean Lafitte, cut down wave after wave of British soldiers from behind impenetrable defenses.
