He would have to stay behind alone, all alone."

I can connect to this because I didn't want my great grandma to pass away, even though all my family knew her time was coming soon. Everyone was very sad. We all watched her leave in her room so we all viewed it.

"The essential thing was to be as far away as possible from the block, from the crucible of death, from the center of hell."

In this passage I think Elie is trying to say they wanted to stay away from death. They were trying to run away from something. I think they were scared of death, or being burned in the crematory since their is fire and a representation of hell is fire.

A great tidal wave of men came rolling onward and would have crushed me like an ant."

Elie is trying to describe what was happening during that time.

"These words of encouragement, even though they came from the mouths of our assassins, did us a great deal of good. No one wanted to give up now ..."

Elie is talking about how when they were marching the Kapo's were encouraging them to keep on marching and the encouragement was actually helping them get through the horrific moment they were going through. I can connect to this because my coach would always encourage my team in our field hockey games. And when she encouraged us we would do better. It always made me want to try harder. So I feel like it made Elie feel like he could not give up and he had to keep marching.
