Rhetorical Analysis #1 Persons Unknown

In Part 2: Persons Unknown in, In Cold Blood, Truman Capote uses rhetorical devices such as vivid word choice and anecdotes describe the significance the crime scene. A few of Mr. Clutters old hunting buddies go to clear out the house of the Clutters after the murders. While cleaning out the house, Capote uses vivid word choice to describe the scene by writing “Mr. Clutter had been found sprawled atop the cardboard mattress...Kenyon had been shot to death...Nancy and her mother had been murdered in their beds” (Capote 78). The purpose of Capote describing the scene is to paint a picture for the reader, this way the reader can understand the significance of the crime scene. Capote used an anecdote to help enforce the significance of the murders. He explained how Andy Earhart had been closest to the Clutter family since he had shared a thirty year log friendship with Mr. Clutter. Capote described how “Earhart had seen his friend evolve from a poorly paid Country Agricultural Agent into one of the region’s most widely known and respected farmers” (Capote 79). This anecdote tugs at the readers’ heart strings and helps the reader understand the impact of the murders and how it affected the people. Capote continued to write, “This hitherto peaceful congregation of neighbors and old friends had suddenly to endure the unique experience of distrusting each other; understandably, they believed that the murderer was among themselves” (Capote 88). In this examples, Capote used words such as “unique experience” and “distrusting” to describe how the murder had created a sense of tension and fear in the once pleasant town of Holcomb. Capote’s purpose of using these rhetorical strategies was to convey the message of the great significance that the murders had on the people of Holcomb.

Rhetorical Analysis #2 Part 2 Persons Unknown

Truman Capote uses rhetorical to devices in In Cold Blood to help the reader figure out who the murderers could be. First Capote uses irony in the title of the section which is titled “Persons Unknown”, this is ironic because this section will help the reader decipher who the unknown murderers could be. While cleaning out the Clutters’ house, one of the men thought it was odd that they, “heard nary nothin’” and how the killer “must’ve knowed we wouldn't hear. Else he wouldn't have took the chance-shooting off a shotgun four times in the middle of the night” (Capote 78). Capote uses imagery to provide information on how peculiar is was that the Clutters’ next door neighbors didn't hear the four gunshots. A newspaper article describes the gruesome crime scene and adds that, “The investigators are left faced with a search for a killer or killers whose cunning is apparent if his (or their) motive is not” (Capote 89) and after Perry reads the article, all he has to say is “‘For this killer or killers...that's incorrect. The grammar is. It ought to be ‘For this killer or these killers’” (Capote 89). This is an example of Capote using humor to provide the reader with clues as to who the murderer or murderers could be. It is quite ironic and humorous that after reading about a horrible murder of a family, that Perry only notices the grammatical error in the newspaper. Perry also asks a rhetorical question to Dick after Dick interrupts Perry from reading the article continuously. Perry says to Dick, “‘Christ! Can’t you let me concentrate’’ (Capote 89). Capote wrote this to show the reader how the murder had an impact on Perry in some way that cause him to read it over and over again. Capote’s purpose was to use rhetorical strategies to help provide the reader with information as to who the murderer or murderers could possibly be.
