The City was the capital of the Aztec empire. According to legend, the Aztecs founded Tenochtitlan after leaving their homeland of Aztlan at the direction of their god, Huitzilopochtli. They were directed  to find a place where they observed an eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a snake. They witnessed this identical view on an island (located in what was previously Lake Texcoco) and considered it as a message from their god, and established Tenochtitlan there. This is significant as this laid down the foundations of a flourishing city, which was then destroyed by the conquistadors who built Mexico City in Tenochitlan's place.

A new Tepanec king came into power, and he feared the military power of the Aztecs. This resulted in him starting a series of attacks. Meanwhile, the Mexicas formed a war alliance with two other city-states, and defeated the Tepanecs in 1428.
