What are some strengths and weaknesses of the British Film Industry?

Strengths - actors/stars like Emma Watson, Daniel Craig, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy, directors like Danny Boyle and Ridley Scott have all risen from British film. British films can show our cultural diversity in terms of different religions and social classes. They show our heritage and history; class system, the monarchy and our sense of collective identity. British film also offer an alternative to typical Hollywood high concept films.

Weaknesses - Lack high pudgets, high production values, A-List stars, top directors, global market reach and the benefit of being part of vertically integrated global media conglomerates (a company that is in charge of production, distribution and exhibition). British film also lacks the merchandising opportunities, focus too much on aspects of narrative and character development - which creates a niche audience. Therefore, the box office losses jeopardise future projects. British film is described as a cottage industry; independent filmmakers have no studio backing

The difference between formalist and revisionist genres is that formalist genre films conform to genre conventions and the formula for success, whereas revisionist genre films change genre conventions and add new elements to the genre that make it new and interesting for new and old audiences. For example, in the zombie genre, texts such as Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero conforms to static genre conventions of zombie horror with lazy undead beings roaming the Earth in search of living flesh to eat. In contrast, texts such as 28 Days Later the conventions of zombie horror, with hyper kinetic zombies and not the traditional archetypal stereotype.

Shaun of the dead follows a linear narrative because the story has a very clear beginning, middle and end. Shaun f the dead does not have any any flash backs or times skips.

it could be argued that it does not follow a liner narrative because there is a two points when ellipses editing is used; firstly when he is is getting ready for the day but this still follows the linear narrative because it still follows a timeline going forward. secondly when Shaun is sharing his plan with ed were it shows different scenario on how he can save Liz and his mum and get them to safety but although you could say it skips to the future it actually doesn't but it does is show you shauns predictions on what and how he wants his day to play out.

We can argue that Shuan of the Dead is of a formalist genre due to the fact that it conforms to classical zombie films. Whilst a revisionist genre would deal with hyper kinetic zombies etc. in order to create something new and widely exciting for its audience whereas Shaun of the Dead handles the exact opposite; for example the zombies represented within this film are quite slow and sluggish, shown as a shuffling predator. On the other hand, Shuan of the Dead can also link to being revisionist in the fact that it has still changed for its audience, specifically the way that they have downgraded props such as machine guns to cricket bats and shovels as weapons.

How do each of the male characters subvert or conform to typical masculine traits?

Shaun - He subverts typical masculine traits by crying over his and Liz's break up. Conforms in the snack catching scene, this sequence implies that Shaun has quick reflexes and, perhaps, superhuman even, which is stereotypical of a male hero. Shaun also spends most of his time saving and looking after his mum, which is also stereotypical of a typical masculine hero. His rebellious style choice of his tie wrapped around his head is reference to the film Rambo, who is an extremely masculine and iconic hero.

Ed conforms to stereotypical masculine attributes by being addicted to playing video games and consuming certain substances. He takes the negative label of masculinity and could even be perceived as being childlike

Pete conforms to typical masculine ideas. He is confrontational, a businessman and has some sort of control of the direction his life is going in, and when he loses that control is when he begins to challenge and be aggressive. He is a male character with aspiration, which is what Shaun and Ed lack. This could reflect masculinity within generation X

Lastly, David subverts masculine ideas. He is passive, like a woman is stereotypically within film. He is hurt and offended easily, and seems to be in touch with his emotions

How do each of the female characters subvert or conform to typical feminine traits?

Liz - Certainly subverts feminine traits due to her independence and decision making. She initiates the break up between her and Shaun as she wants to push him to have aspiration, to perhaps be more like Pete. Because Liz has tried time and time again to create motivation within Shaun and can see him dragging her down, she actively makes the decision to leave him, which is indifferent to the traditional female archetypal character we see represented in Hollywood film.

Barbara - As well as her being a reference to George A. Romero's zombie horror franchise, Barbara is represented as passive. Without her husband Phillip and Shaun, she is doomed. In fact, when Shaun turns his back to try and be the hero, Barbara is bitten by a zombie. This could be representative of the baby boomer generation; a different generation's ideology. In comparison to other independent characters such as Liz or Yvonne, she could be seen as from a different time period

Yvonne - Subverts in the same way Liz does, she is different and redefines what it means to be a woman or feminine. In the scene where Shaun and her groups collide, it's insinuated, with the use of more iconic comedians at the time, that Yvonne is a reflection of Shaun, perhaps showing the audience (and him, in some light) of what the archetypal character should be and making us subconsciously make a comparison to them both. Yvonne presumably brings her team to safety, unlike Shaun, and brings the army to save the day. She is evidence that the archetypal character of being a hero is no longer constrained by gender
